Show Notes

How do you follow Jesus when the culture celebrates what God's Word calls sin?

It's one of the biggest questions Christians are facing today.

This week on the Known Legacy Podcast, Bill and Travis unpack a post Travis shared that sparked an important conversation about sin, truth, grace, and what it means to faithfully follow Christ in today's culture.

Together they discuss:

If you've ever felt unsure of how to respond to the issues our culture is facing—or how to speak the truth with both conviction and grace—this episode is for you.

[00:03:22] Speaker B: That's one word for it. [00:03:24] Speaker A: Name Legacy Podcast brought to you by Rin. [00:03:26] Speaker B: My glasses are steaming up because. Anyways. Okay, here's a question. [00:03:32] Speaker A: Okay. Okay. [00:03:33] Speaker B: Serious. For. For a moment. What is the epic movie theme song that you just like? You. As soon as you hear the song, you know the movie, and you love the movie as well. I'll go first. I'll take this one because I'm afraid that one of you guys are going to choose it. This one is. It's a song by Kenny Loggins. And no, it is not Footloose. It is. [00:04:00] Speaker A: Is it Pooh Corner? [00:04:03] Speaker B: I don't even know. What are you talking about? [00:04:06] Speaker A: He did Pooh Corner. [00:04:08] Speaker B: Yeah. It's a song. I. I've never. I'm not familiar with that song. Learn your music. [00:04:14] Speaker A: When I saw him. Side note. When I saw him, he did a [00:04:17] Speaker B: song called Poo Poo Corner. [00:04:19] Speaker A: Poo's corner. Pooh is in Pooh and Tigger. [00:04:21] Speaker B: Winnie the Pooh. [00:04:22] Speaker A: Yeah, Winnie the Pooh. And it's so good. [00:04:23] Speaker B: That makes it. [00:04:24] Speaker A: When I saw him live. Side note. Sorry, buddy. In R. When I saw him live, he played that song acoustic. It was. Okay. Now I'm done with that. And he just went right into all of his other stuff. Everything else. [00:04:33] Speaker B: Anyway. Did he replay the song that goes. [00:04:35] Speaker A: I'm all right. [00:04:36] Speaker B: He did. Nobody worry about me. [00:04:40] Speaker A: Yes. All right. [00:04:41] Speaker B: That's my favorite. Caddyshack. Let's go. It's. [00:04:44] Speaker A: That's your movie? That's your movie. [00:04:46] Speaker B: Yeah, that's my song. That's my movie. And I already pictured the gopher. [00:04:49] Speaker A: Kind of. [00:04:49] Speaker B: Yeah, I was gonna say the gopher. Oh, yeah, the gophers. For me, at my age, at that time, I didn't understand anything else going on in the movie, but there was a gopher that was a puppet. And I'm like, I'm all in on this. [00:04:58] Speaker A: It's a Cinderella story. [00:05:04] Speaker B: Bill Murray was brilliant and horrible to work with in that movie. [00:05:07] Speaker A: Oh, I couldn't even imagine. Anyways, so great, great movie, though. What about you, Kyle? [00:05:14] Speaker B: Okay, I've got several. So, okay, chapter one, Ghostbusters. Oh, that's a good one. And then the other two are not really lyrics, but you. Your requirement was that you instantly recognize the movie. [00:05:30] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:05:31] Speaker B: James Bond. [00:05:32] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:05:34] Speaker B: And then Mission Impossible. [00:05:36] Speaker A: Yeah, there it is. There it is. [00:05:38] Speaker B: There you go. Fantastic. All of them bangers. Good job, Kyle. Thank you for bringing us back to civility here, Bill. [00:05:45] Speaker A: Don't you forget about me. And if they want, like, throw your fist. [00:05:49] Speaker B: Don't, don't, don't, don't. [00:05:51] Speaker A: Yeah, don't you so good. [00:05:54] Speaker B: If you don't know the reference. You should get a life. If you do know the reference. Welcome to aarp. We're happy that you've joined us. And the discounts are amazing. [00:06:04] Speaker A: They are amazing, aren't they? No. The Breakfast Club is a. The definitive movie, quintessential movie of John Hughes Library. [00:06:13] Speaker B: Oh, such a great. [00:06:15] Speaker A: I mean, it's just a great time. Yeah, great time. Loved it, man. [00:06:17] Speaker B: Pretty in Pink. Are you kidding me? Oh, my goodness. [00:06:20] Speaker A: So good. All of it was so good. [00:06:21] Speaker B: Yeah, all of it. So anyways, Breakfast Club, if you didn't know the movie, it's the Breakfast Club. [00:06:25] Speaker A: Absolutely. [00:06:25] Speaker B: And if you haven't watched it in a while, go back and watch it, because it's. Some of the things in there are so deep and so profound and so beautiful. [00:06:31] Speaker A: It's good, man. This. This bringing together of all those. What about you, dad? [00:06:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:37] Speaker A: No, John. Yeah. Anyways, John Bender. Screws fall out of the time. The world's an imperfect place. You know, it's just a great movie. So that one's a shout out to my brother who loves. He actually has a quote in his room in his. In his office. It says, screws fell out of the time. The world's in a perfect place. [00:06:53] Speaker B: I love it. [00:06:54] Speaker A: It's so good. When he takes out the door. Thanks for joining us in our chaos today. We are so glad to have you here. [00:07:01] Speaker B: And we. Okay, so the podcast today is something I posted a while ago. [00:07:05] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because. Yeah, I wanted you to. [00:07:07] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. The simple post that I put out on Facebook that. I love putting these posts out because it always makes some of my friends so mad at me. But that's okay. And it was this idea. The greatest lie that the church is believing today is that we can define sin. Yeah, we cannot define sin. God is the only one who can define sin. That's a little bit longer than what the actual post was. But it's this idea of, like, we in the church have a really bad habit of doing. And I think it's both sides. We have declared things that are not sinful. Sinful. And we declare things that God has clearly stated throughout his Word, Old and New Testament. This is outside of the design that I have for you in your life. And we have said, well, that makes me uncomfortable, or that might not be embraced by people. So we're gonna redefine that as not sin. And I think both of those are wrong. And I think it actually goes back to the original conversation that Satan had with. With Adam and with Eve. And it's this idea of that, hey, if you take a bite of this fruit, you can be like God. You can know good and evil. And the underpins of that is you get to decide what is good and evil. And anytime we as humans have put in the place of deciding what is good and evil, we mess it up. And so our job is to know the scriptures well enough to understand the scriptures well enough that we can, with clarity, with humility, declare, no, this is. This is outside of God's bounds. And so he offers us forgiveness, he offers us repentance. [00:08:37] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:37] Speaker B: But the worst thing we can do in the church is redefine it and pretend like it's no big deal, like it's not a sin, and it's not in rebellion to God and who he is. Yeah. [00:08:46] Speaker A: Yeah. So it's. I think a lot of it comes from this idea. I remember someone saying at one point in one of my other churches, there was this wisdom of man that nature comes from. I need, I want, I deserve. And so if I think I need this or, you know, I want this, I. I have earned this right. And we start walking in that, and we kind of. We. We just pervert the truth of God's scriptures. I mean, there's a lot of things I wish weren't in there, if I'll be honest with you. Like, I wish I could do things. [00:09:15] Speaker B: I wish I could cuss. I wish I could be greedy. I wish I could covet. I wish that my life would be better if I looked at my neighbor and said, man, I wish my life was just like theirs. [00:09:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:23] Speaker B: But the reality says that God, that's. That's out of bound for us. [00:09:26] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:26] Speaker B: It is not good and right that we would covet. He says, listen, I have given you the gifts that you need and I've given you what you desire. So live in your lane and stop evaluating your life on what you perceive other lanes to be. Do you love the smoke effect that's coming through that? That's kind of funny. Just for you guys watching the video. So I'm going to let you take the next part of this because I have to obviously put a fire out real quick. [00:09:52] Speaker A: I know, exactly. Well, but there's this moment in our, in our journey as we, as we are walking as children of God, to say, man, is this uplifting? Is it beneficial to others? If I'm. It's like we. We've allowed certain sins to. To take hold of us, and instead of saying, no, this is wrong, we're like, we're going to act like it's not there. It's like, man, if there's a train coming and we're sitting there going, hey, I have two options. I can either celebrate this and go, oh, you know what? It's okay. There's no train. And then, boom, you get hit by. Or I can say, hey, you need to get off. The train's coming. [00:10:24] Speaker B: Right. [00:10:24] Speaker A: Well, how, you know, they like, oh, you know, you have offended me by telling me that there's a train. No, no, I don't get to make the basis of truth. Right. God's word does. And so we have two options in this. Do we lean towards the truth? Do we not pervert the scriptures, which is what's happened over and over again when we see God's design for man from the very, very beginning. And there's many different ones, but we've moved this line so far that now we have people claiming to be followers of Jesus that have accepted false beliefs about sin and are not just accepting it, but are completely celebrating it. And the perversion of that man has really destroyed so many churches. [00:11:00] Speaker B: I mean, just imagine, just for a second, and the phrase that's always used is, well, you're being hateful or you're being bigoted or you're not Loving them and you need to love them and you need. And I totally get it. But. But I look at it as, like, in many ways, as a pastor, I'm a spiritual doctor. Right. And my job is to discern what is the actual diagnosis of what's going on here. [00:11:19] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:20] Speaker B: Declare that to them in such a way that they may receive healing. Right. [00:11:23] Speaker A: Yep. [00:11:24] Speaker B: I would be a horrible doctor if I said, okay, you have lung cancer. I know you have lung cancer because you are. You smoke, you know, two or three packs a day. But because you might be mad at me, because I'm going to declare to you that you have lung cancer. I. I'm just going to say, you know what? Lung cancer is actually good. It's actually good for you. And so I would go to three or four. In fact, we're going to make smoking a celebration. We're going to put a we should smoke more flag in our church. And then we're going to have parades about how smoking is actually really good for you, even though it's going to kill you in the long. Does that make sense? [00:12:00] Speaker A: Oh, absolutely. [00:12:01] Speaker B: But that's what we see the church in North America doing is not taking a stand saying, hey, listen, we. God's forgiveness is for that. Like, God forgives me for the language I use, and God forgives me for my coveting heart, and God forgives me for my greediness. God can forgive you of that. But if you don't even know that you need forgiveness of that, you're going to live within it and it's going to harm you. [00:12:24] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:24] Speaker B: And ultimately your relationship with God. [00:12:26] Speaker A: Yeah, right. Yeah, absolutely. And so I think as we walk through this, we've got to look and go, first thing, man, as we're like, what is true? What? No, what do we do? What do we need? What do we do we need to lean on? John 14:6. Jesus said on the way, the truth and life, no one comes to the Father except through me. [00:12:41] Speaker B: Jesus. [00:12:41] Speaker A: So any of these. Yes, exactly. Jesus talking himself and any other church that would say there is another way is not following the Bible. Amen. You know, right to this very end. Then from there we go. Okay, If I believe that this is my basis of truth, what does it say about everything? Like I said, there's things I wish I didn't have to abide by if I'm saying that from my flesh. [00:13:04] Speaker B: Right. [00:13:04] Speaker A: Okay. So. But I look at the truth and I go, no, I shouldn't be doing this now. People are going to rip this apart and be like, oh, My gosh. Well, what about, you know, in the Old Testament where he said, bash the heads of the babies and, well, man, they were trying to annihilate the nation of Israel. Their whole goal was, I want to see them annihilated. There is one truth. If someone comes against you and you say, jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to Father except through me, and they want to persecute you for it. They're not following the Scriptures, they're not following the truth, and they've walked away from that truth. [00:13:31] Speaker B: Well, and I think another thing that kind of is an offshoot of this that I wrestle with and I deal with, and it's a longer conversation, unfortunately, social media doesn't always allow it is God is love. And so it's not loving to do this kind of stuff. And they've almost elevated love into an idol. [00:13:47] Speaker A: Right. [00:13:48] Speaker B: Like, it's all about love. And I'm like, well, if you actually go back to scripture, Jesus and the thing he did was motivated by love because he is love. But in Mark 1, 14 and 15, he actually declared declares what his purpose was. And it wasn't to just be warm, fuzzy love. It was to declare repentance and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. That's what his love produced in him. That we would be people who would repent of our behavior, that we would repent of our rebellion, and that we would have a new, restored relationship with Him. Not that we would say, well, that's uncomfortable, or culturally, we've progressed beyond this, and so we're just going to pretend like it's not there or. Or we're going to define that. That is something I don't like, whether it be dancing or drinking. And so I'm going to make that a sin, even though it's not a sin. You know what I'm saying? [00:14:35] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. [00:14:36] Speaker B: And so both of those are very dangerous for us as a church, and we need to guard against those and again, return back to Scripture. Is it true? If it's all true, what does it say about God and who he is? What does it say about us and who we are and our need for Him? And then how do we begin to walk in that? With love, grace, and mercy? Absolutely. But without compromising on the diagnosis that has to be there. [00:15:00] Speaker A: It's funny, you know, that tradition just sinks in so many times. And I remember Francis Chanwyn said. He goes. He said, man, if you were on a desert island and a Bible just floated up, how different would the Church and your walk with the Lord. Look, compared to what you've been trained. And so I'm not saying don't. Don't take all the training that you've learned and understand that. But, man, look at it from this perspective of if God is my ultimate authority, if the scriptures are my ultimate authority, what does it say about this specific situation? Yeah, all things are lawful. Not all things are expedient. There's things like that if there's an addiction that someone holds on to, if they are. If they're living. But here's the thing. Like you said, we've itemized certain things. Don't drink, smoke or chew or hang out with girls that do, you know, that kind of thing. And it's like. But it's beyond that. It's. Man, right now, I think, what, 340,000 people a year die of heart disease. Why are we not ripping apart in church about sugar? [00:15:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:52] Speaker A: And having 4,000 calories at a, you know, like a potluck dinner. Do I agree that, man, I need to be healthier in my life, But I'm looking at my own circle, and I'm going, man, I need can only fix me. So in this situation, I look at my life, and when someone said this, you know, as we were talking about marital counseling point, they said, listen, in your life, draw a circle around you, stand in it and say, God, fix whatever's inside the circle. [00:16:14] Speaker B: Right. [00:16:14] Speaker A: And focus on me. So am I letting the word of God wash over me and focusing on me first? What if. What if I took my day and I said, God, I'm going to let you challenge me to change myself. Like, I need you to change me. [00:16:29] Speaker B: Right. [00:16:30] Speaker A: And just like, we had a few. We had a podcast on a little while ago with. With Lauren. [00:16:37] Speaker B: Podcast. [00:16:38] Speaker A: Go back and listen. We will link it right. Right here in. In the YouTube channel. But, man, I love what he did. I can control this. I'm gonna do this. I'm not saying don't have an opinion. I'm not talking about that. I mean, there are great people. I mean, I like Cliff Nechdal, and he's got all these. I mean, it's great. That's not my calling. But I'm saying what Lauren did was he said, I can fix this. I'm gonna go out and I'm gonna share hope with hopeless people because he knew at his core that everyone was hopeless without Jesus. If that irritates. If that irritates you, I'd love to talk to you. Info at Known Legacy. I'll shoot that over to Travis. And I was like, But I'm saying, like, like, I would love to talk to you about that, because that spike of your heart is the reality that, man, once there's a change there, a lot of other things change immediately. And so I think for us to walk in this and go, we have made. We. We've allowed the line, because instead of saying we're going to proclaim Christ and be people be offended by the right thing, but we're going to try and let them in and not be offended by certain things, and then in that moment, hopefully they'll change. I'm like, no, I think we need to have a hard stance on this. Jesus had a hard stance, but he was loving at the same time. He let the rich young ruler leave. [00:17:46] Speaker B: Right. [00:17:47] Speaker A: He was like, no, you need to do this. I don't want to. [00:17:50] Speaker B: Well, what about. What about the woman caught in adultery? Right? And you see, and everyone loves, you know, loves the part about, do those without sin cast the first stone. Correct. Right. [00:17:59] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:59] Speaker B: But at the end of that, after the restoration moment, after forgiveness, he says, go and sin no more. [00:18:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:18:04] Speaker B: He doesn't say, hey, that's really not sinful. Because I know that's how you make a living. And I know life is really hard without that kind of stuff. So you just do. In fact, again, the old trope. Let's make sure there's a month dedicated to celebrating that so that you don't feel uncomfortable with that. And so we're just gonna. We're gonna elevate it and pretend like it's no big deal, and we're gonna celebrate. And that's the very opposite of what Jesus did. Jesus said, hey, you know, go and sin no more. I've changed your life. This moment's going to change your life. Go and sin now. Did she sin again? Absolutely, she did. And his grace and forgiveness was complete for her at that moment. Like, it was at the moment when all the men were there with the stones. [00:18:42] Speaker A: Our job is not just to rip apart, but to join together, like to build in relationship. Jesus was a relational God who literally came down to dwell among man. For us to have that moment to go, I have the truth within me. I know the hope. And the thing I can do is I can walk with this person now. I don't have to sit here and go, hey, listen, I need you to know that you're a sinner before I walk with you. I can just walk with you. And I will tell you, just like I love using that example of Lauren again, because when he journeyed with people, when he journeyed with these guys, he just shared hope and those people saw the truth within him. And so for us to just live that life as well is exactly what we need to do in proclaiming this truth. And I think that's where the line gets stronger with going, I know it's sin. I know it's not. Because it's not even sin. It's hopelessness. It's just a matter of being hopeless. And so if we can look at people from hopeful hopeless, I'm that's going to bring them. A person doesn't walk into a different lifestyle. They don't walk into a situation. I don't think anyone wakes up and says, you know, I think I want to be a prostitute today. [00:19:40] Speaker B: Nope. [00:19:40] Speaker A: They walk into a series of bad decisions from a life that's there. But what if someone brought in hope to them and said, I'm going to journey with you, I'm going to walk with you and I'm going to show you the truth. But man, how many times do we as believers don't do that. We just see evil and we move on from there. [00:19:53] Speaker B: Right. [00:19:54] Speaker A: Or we counteract. We go, we're just going to love everybody and never acknowledge the sin. [00:19:58] Speaker B: So again, Jesus is a great perfect example on this in that he hung out with all the sinners, the disciples, they were sinners. The Pharisees, Sadducees, they were sinners. The tax collectors, the prostitutes, they were sinners. [00:20:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:10] Speaker B: He continued to be relationship with them. Realize that time spent with Jesus will change the hearts of man and women. [00:20:18] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:18] Speaker B: You know, so anyways, thank you guys so much for listening. We're happy that you were a part of this. God bless you all. Anything from you, Bill? [00:20:25] Speaker A: No, man, I just hope that we would. We'd run to the truth of the word of God before we run to anything else and say, God, what is, what is real love? What does it look like that love came from Christ, that came from the fruit of the Spirit. Are we living out these fruits of the spirit? How to. How do we walk in that? And it's in community. We need people around us. [00:20:43] Speaker B: Absolutely. And if you're struggling with any of these things, first and foremost, God is a God of who delights in repentance and delights in forgiveness and giving and restoring brokenness. That is his M.O. and he does it over and over again. [00:20:55] Speaker A: Yeah. So if you came away from this feeling condemned or broken, here's the deal. We have a Jesus who literally all me and Travis are are just two beggars who have found bread, and we're just trying to share it with people. [00:21:05] Speaker B: Correct. [00:21:06] Speaker A: We don't have this perfection in us. [00:21:07] Speaker B: No. [00:21:07] Speaker A: But, man, when. When we look at the truth, there's sin that with. And I'm like, lord, forgive me, I'm given a choice. Yep. And for someone to say, no, no, no, you're okay. Just. Just keep on doing it. Nope. Is not the right answer. And so I pray that we would be able to walk with you and have a longer conversation with you. We love you guys. We believe in you, and I hope you guys have yourself a great week. God bless. [00:21:27] Speaker B: Thanks for listening to the Known Legacy podcast. [00:21:30] Speaker A: We'd love to hear from you. So email us your questions or comments to Info Sam.
