[00:01:07] Speaker A: Time out. I only wear. I don't really wear a lot of shorts.
[00:01:09] Speaker C: You do not. I only wear shorts.
[00:01:11] Speaker A: I'm like a jean guy.
[00:01:12] Speaker C: You are a jean guy.
[00:01:13] Speaker A: Even now I'm wearing jeans.
[00:01:14] Speaker C: You know, it happens. Anyways, Kyle, our producer in the corner. Hello. And so happy you're here. Infoomelegacy.org is fantastic. If you want to go to the website, you can donate to help the mission and the ministry of what we're about here, as well as see speaking engagements that Bill has coming up and find out information about his upcoming book.
[00:01:32] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:01:32] Speaker C: That will be out in a few months.
[00:01:34] Speaker A: I don't know if it's a few months, but we'll. We'll see what happens.
[00:01:36] Speaker C: Year, year and a half, maybe something like that.
[00:01:38] Speaker A: What? What you know. But below this, there is a link for you guys. It is a church survey that we want you to fill out because as we're at this book, we're talking a lot about discipleship, like real discipleship, moving, you know, kind of doing life with other guys. So I'd like you to fill that out. Click that link. You can keep it anonymous, you can put your name in there. But we'd love you to be a part of that survey because it helps as we write this new book.
[00:01:59] Speaker C: So love it. Love it. So question of the day.
[00:02:03] Speaker A: Question of the day.
[00:02:05] Speaker C: Did you not know that was coming?
[00:02:07] Speaker A: I was a little bit off.
Let's try it again. Try it again. Try it again.
[00:02:10] Speaker C: Question of the day.
[00:02:11] Speaker A: Question of the day.
[00:02:13] Speaker C: Well, I just got done with my two month sabbatical and needless to say, did not go as planned, but it was still very good. And so the question that I want to hear from you guys, since I haven't seen you in a while, is, what's your highlight from the summer? What was your highlight from the summer? 2026 summertime highlight from the summer.
[00:02:29] Speaker A: What was your highlight, Kyle? Oh, let me go first. Okay, I'll go first. Well, I had a lot of good highlights. In fact, it was, you know, June, historically, for men's ministry isn't exactly a plethora of options, but I did get invited to speak at a few different camps. And, man, when I was there, it was really cool to see students make decisions for the Lord. In fact, we had over 30 kids come to know Jesus this year at camp. And, man, it was really cool to see these kids not just make gospel decisions, but, like, I am getting freedom from certain things, right? And it was so cool that they were confessing sin, they were acknowledging their. Their apathy and their walk with the Lord. And that was a lot of fun. So I think that was probably one of my main highlights this summer.
[00:03:10] Speaker C: Fantastic.
[00:03:11] Speaker A: Was that.
[00:03:12] Speaker C: Kyle, how about you?
[00:03:14] Speaker B: Well, I don't have my camera on, so. Oh, well, then I'm gonna put you guys up.
[00:03:19] Speaker C: All right. Did you.
[00:03:20] Speaker B: Did you say speak?
[00:03:22] Speaker A: I might have said speak.
[00:03:23] Speaker C: I missed it. How did I miss Unspeaken.
[00:03:27] Speaker B: I got to speak.
[00:03:28] Speaker A: I got to speak and say.
[00:03:30] Speaker B: So funny thing is, I suggested this topic, and then I realized summer is when we do nothing.
[00:03:38] Speaker A: Maybe that's the best thing.
[00:03:39] Speaker B: So, yeah, we have a lot of stuff in the spring and the fall. Winter, but yeah, the summer we just sort of stay at home.
[00:03:47] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:03:47] Speaker A: I just saw this reel and it said. It was like, man, like, you're over 50. Why do you go? Why do you go? Bets really said, well, between 1985 and 1990, I spent eight of my nine lives. So I just. I'm just happy to be here right now.
[00:03:59] Speaker C: Agreed. Agreed.
[00:04:00] Speaker B: So.
[00:04:01] Speaker C: Well, for me. Thank you, Kyle.
It was a sabbatical, and so had to. Had the opportunity to say goodbye to my mom. She passed. And so we have a big burial for her out at the national cemetery in Pensacola coming up at the end of the month. So we're exc. About that.
And I would say for me, it was Just family. That was my goal. One of my big goals for the sabbatical was just invest in and connect with the family. And so we got to go on a great trip to this little island in Spanish Wells, Bahamas. And I pledged to the mayor, actually, when I was there, because I was talking about how much I enjoyed it, and I had a chance to meet him and he's like, just don't tell anyone.
We love our island, we love our guests, but it does not need to grow. So for. Forget that I said Spanish Wells, Bahamas. But it was fantastic. I went to Boop.
It was fantastic. It was a great time on the beach. Just hung out, read books, smoked some cigars, and had a lot of great conversations with the kids.
[00:04:59] Speaker A: Yeah, I did see that one picture of your whole family. Like, that's rich, man. That's awesome. That's a good time. So loved it. Loved it.
[00:05:06] Speaker C: It was good. It was good. A little tension with my sister, My sister, my daughter and I, because I had different views on where the camera should be. And she ended up winning. And I'm glad she did because it turned out much better. Much better than what I would.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: They have a wisdom there with camera angles and stuff. They do, they do. Like, like, I look at the old men's ministry picture and like, dudes are just like.
They just look like stone. And girls are always like, like posing and yes. Three quarter stance. And I'm like, what the heck are you doing? Yes. But they do come out good, so.
[00:05:35] Speaker C: They do. They do. Nice. So anyways, introduce our guests and get us going in the conversation.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:05:40] Speaker A: We are super excited to have John Trent back on with us today.
Author, speaker, and super excited to have John on again. Our audience has gotten even bigger and louder.
[00:05:52] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: The last time. But, man, we are so glad to have you on, John, man. Thank you for being, you know, really quick. For those who haven't heard your other podcast, just share a little bit about yourself.
[00:06:02] Speaker C: And before you get there, John.
[00:06:04] Speaker A: Oh, sorry.
[00:06:04] Speaker C: I'm sorry, I'm gonna interrupt because I want to know what was your highlight from the summer, John?
[00:06:07] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:06:08] Speaker B: Yeah. No, gosh, you guys, that's great.
My highlight was.
So we have these two precious, awesome daughters, and one of them lives here with a couple of grandkids, actually three.
And then the other one has a couple of grandkids and is up in Seattle. Her husband is an ESPN guy for, you know, does the Seahawks and the Mariners, but they're moving down to Arizona. So here is my highlight. Okay, all right, all right. Do you Guys know what a GSP is?
German short haired pointer. So picture a dog. Picture a dog is like a small horse. Okay, okay.
[00:06:48] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:06:49] Speaker B: I mean they are unbelievably strong and fast. They don't like people, they don't like other dogs.
So I spent three days driving with Carrie down with these two crazy animals. Oh no.
From Seattle to Phoenix. Okay.
And picture every two hours you gotta stop because it's summer, right?
[00:07:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:12] Speaker B: You know, so you got to let them out. Well, as soon as you let them out, man.
Yeah, but we went the back route, you know, every, every from Seattle. We didn't go down I5, you know.
[00:07:23] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:07:23] Speaker B: LA. We were way in Idaho and Nevada. Northern Nevada. There's nothing there.
[00:07:29] Speaker C: No.
[00:07:29] Speaker B: Which was great for the dogs, but that was my highlight was living through three days and, and the hotel. Have you ever stayed in a hotel with two dog, two crazy dogs. So anyway, it was.
[00:07:40] Speaker A: It doesn't sound fun at all, but it does sound like a highlight.
[00:07:42] Speaker C: I feel like there's a lot of hidden stories there that sometime we'll, we'll over a campfire, we'll get the real story of what's going on.
So anyways, John, introduce yourself and kind of update us on what's been going on.
[00:07:55] Speaker B: Well, you know, basically I'm a, you know, big fan of you guys who, you know, are just, you know, in the trenches working with men. And I've had the privilege over a lot of years. I'm like really old. And so I go back to, you know, those early promise keeper days and getting to speak to, you know, a whole bunch of people all over the country and primarily, you know, for a lot of us.
I'm trying to think of a nice way to put this, but. But you know, when the world, the whole world, you're a hammer and the whole world's a nail, you know, and that's kind of like me.
I grew up without, you know, the blessing, what scripture calls the blessing. I grew up in a single parent home.
Today, so many of us are right there. Back when I grew up, we were an anomaly, you know.
[00:08:52] Speaker C: Right, right.
[00:08:53] Speaker B: But.
But all of a sudden this guy shows up. 6 foot 4, ex Chico State football player, stud. Guy led every. Led half our football team to Christ, including my twin brother and myself and my older bro and Travis. Dang. I'm sorry losing your mom. You know, my mom was the one that raised us, so. Talk about a wonderful, wonderful person. But we didn't know the Lord. You know, we didn't grow up. We were, you Know, I was kicked out of fifth grade, total mess. Hated my dad. He was an angry alcoholic. And then Doug Barum shows up and oh my gosh, you know, leaves us all to Christ. And of course you guys know this. As soon as you come to know Christ, you have no more problems, right?
[00:09:39] Speaker C: Of course.
[00:09:39] Speaker A: It's easy. It's easy.
[00:09:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
So from then on, there hasn't been any issues or problems. I, I just basically make mistakes and write books about them. Is. Is kind of what I.
[00:09:49] Speaker C: The grace of Jesus, baby.
[00:09:51] Speaker A: I love it.
[00:09:52] Speaker C: Jesus, I love it.
[00:09:53] Speaker A: Well, it definitely bleeds into this idea of taking of like this guy who probably didn't even think he was making much of. I mean, he's probably making a difference. But wasn't, wasn't, I guess, proactive to go, hey, I am going to impact these kids and it's going to not just change them, it's going to change their legacies and.
[00:10:10] Speaker C: Right.
[00:10:11] Speaker A: I mean, I mean, so, so how long did you journey with this guy? Did you. Was it, was it a kind of a. Just like a semester or like a couple of years?
[00:10:18] Speaker B: Well, you know, so, you know, my older brother was a big stud, you know, football guy. And so he leads him to Christ first. This is young life, you know, so why do you go to young life? Because there's the girl, the girls are there, right. And so Joe would go and he comes to know Christ. And now we're, you know, we're freshmen. He's a senior and all state offensive guard. Big, big guy for high school. Big, big guy. Today it'd be a running back, but you know what I mean?
But he, you know, but Joe threatened our lives and my twin brother and I and said, you're going to
[00:10:57] Speaker A: awesome.
[00:10:58] Speaker B: So that's really, you know, where it started for me. But we went two different directions. So, you know, I'm a twin.
If you ever see me doing something wrong, it's my brother, you know, he's a big time scientist. He doesn't really do people. I do people more and suck at math and all the stuff.
[00:11:16] Speaker A: He's welcome to the club.
[00:11:18] Speaker B: Yeah. But he, but both of us had two different journeys to Christ, so we didn't come to know Christ till senior year.
[00:11:25] Speaker A: Oh, wow.
[00:11:26] Speaker B: And so I was around it. I started to hear it. But my deal was moral. It was all moral. I didn't want to quit doing what I was doing. And I really realized, man, if I come to know Christ, he, you know, it's not a minor thing. It's like I got It. Or at least with the guys I hung with, you couldn't be kind of semi Christian, you know, Right? You had to really, you know, step into it. And my twin brother Jeff was. It was all intellectual. Is the Bible really true?
You know, is there.
Is there really even a God? You know, Jeff went through all the intellectual things. Well, senior year, he drags us to a Billy Graham movie. Six of us on the football team. Okay?
And.
And it was the worst movie. Now, don't email, Okay? I love. I. Did you guys ever meet Billy Graham?
[00:12:17] Speaker A: I've not.
[00:12:18] Speaker C: I did not.
[00:12:20] Speaker B: Yeah. God, what a stud. I got to meet him twice. I spoke at, you know, that he had this. He has this big place in, you know, in the mountains, North Carolina.
And anyway, you know, first time you meet Billy Graham, he sticks out his hand and goes, hi, I'm Billy Graham. Like, oh, really?
You're Billy Graham?
[00:12:41] Speaker C: Didn't know that.
[00:12:41] Speaker B: Oh, humble, great guy. You know, all this stuff, you know, it was the worst movie ever made. It was. He was. This was in the early days. Now, Christian movies have gotten a lot better. But. But, you know, this lady gets sick and she has cancer and dies. And I thought she deserved it. I was. You know, I didn't. I was a typical high school kid.
And.
But at end of the movie, okay, this guy stands up.
Do you know what they used to do at a Bill, at a. At a movie like that? They'd have somebody's. The lights would come on and some guy standing up there. And I remember, he goes, do you want to change the pictures of your life story?
[00:13:18] Speaker A: Oh, I like that.
[00:13:19] Speaker B: And I'm sitting there and I'm such a mess. And my mom is back in Indiana. She's medically retired, sick. We have no money. We were ra. My older brother's raising us, which today, you know, you'd be arrested. But back then, you know, it was just.
And.
And Jeff and I are there and these other four guys, and he go and he starts talking. He gives an invitation, you know, to Christ. And I remember looking down the road and seeing Doug Barum. And that's all of a sudden where it all. You know, the scales fell off. And I realized, man, there's a six foot four Jesus there. And what he had been doing to love and to serve and to encourage. My dad, I never. I'd never met my dad at that point. He left when we were two months old and. But he was the one that went to our games. He was the one who served us. He was the one who, you Know, would encourage us and show up and stuff. So I do think that, man, it was that time that we, you know, five out of the six of us walked down and gave our lives to Christ.
And.
And four of us are still going on strong with the Lord. One of us is already home. He died in a plane crash a couple years ago. So. So I think, you know, again, you guys all have stories. Every one of us listening have stories, right?
But. But for a lot of us, we have to move from broken to blessed. And so that's. That's really kind of what.
What I get to do. And again, what Doug did for me was help me move from broken to blessed.
[00:14:56] Speaker A: You know, talk a little bit about those moments because you said, you know, there's a lot of investment, and I think there can be a lie in a guy that's like, I'm not making a difference. I'm just showing up to a game, right? And I think. And, you know, I talk to a lot of guys in the church. I know you do too, Travis. And I'm guessing you do the same thing, John, where it's like, well, all I'm doing is showing up. All I'm doing is taking this kid out to coffee. He doesn't seem to even care. I just, I speak into that a little bit because I. I talked to more guys that are like, well, I don't know enough about the scriptures. I don't know. And I'm like, but it doesn't sound like this guy would walk up to you and go, now, John, in the Book of James, it says, like, he just showed up, right?
[00:15:34] Speaker B: Yeah, you know, I can.
I'd love to say, I think, I think.
I don't mean this in any way. Dishonoring. Okay?
But he wasn't the best biblical scholar in the. You know, he was a new cr. He was a new Christian.
But he knew. He knew Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so. And, man, we would sit down and we'd have campaigners, which is supposed to be this discipleship group, and we'd read a chapter of the Bible and then we'd play slow motion tackle football. Now, if you don't think you can get hurt, if you don't think you can get hurt playing slow motion tackle football, let me tell.
[00:16:20] Speaker C: Yes, you can.
[00:16:21] Speaker B: Six or 12 guys, you know, and we're all fighting for, you know, it was just a scrum, you know, and so. But he just. You're right, he just kept showing up, you know, and even when I was A mess in senior year, so. Because, remember, we didn't. We didn't turn around right away, you know.
[00:16:40] Speaker C: Right.
[00:16:40] Speaker B: But. And that's something too, that frustrates people. You're right. They're thinking, you know, it's. What difference does it make? But, man, if you're a dad, then, you know, take them out to breakfast. If you're, you know, if you're dealing with people in terms of, you know, maybe you're helping out with. There's a kid that doesn't, you know, like, we never went to Boy Scouts. You have no dad. Back then there were father, son, you know, deals.
Today it's parent, child. Right, right. Back then, so you had to go with a neighbor dad, like, to the football banquet. You know, we had to, you know, call a friend. Hey, could we go? Because you're supposed to sit with your dad, you know.
[00:17:20] Speaker C: Right, right.
[00:17:22] Speaker B: But. But here's the great news real quick. Okay? There was this guy named Josiah in, you know, 2nd Kings 21.
And. And you guys, of course, have spent. You guys are both biblical scholars, you know, but most of us, we don't get to that point portion of scripture very often, you know, but this guy named Josiah. So his grandfather was basically like a mafia lord boss, you know, he's the worst king ever. Kills all these people. Pathetic.
When he dies, listen to this.
He goes, okay, now I've been pathetic. Now all my family's seen that. But guess what I'm going to do when I die? I'm going to get buried in my backyard. He's buried in the garden of Uza there, right where he lives. So you got to walk by his grave every day.
[00:18:09] Speaker C: Every single day.
[00:18:10] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, the net. Well, his. His dad, that's his grandfather. His dad's pathetic. Okay. Even worse, it says in Scripture, even worse than Manasseh, you know, the grandfather. So his dad, Ammon dies.
Where does he get slaughtered? Killed by these other guys. He's only king for two years. He gets buried right next to him. So now Josiah is walking by. Talk about a family legacy.
I know you guys came from perfect homes.
[00:18:38] Speaker A: Oh, of course.
[00:18:40] Speaker B: Christians and, you know, never had any problems. But, you know, for most of us, we have a. We have a background, right?
[00:18:48] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:18:48] Speaker B: So what does Josiah do? You know, he says he walked in all the ways of his father and. No, his father was Ammon. Right?
[00:18:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: Okay, so you'd think. What would you think? You'd think I was going to be just like my dad, which I was. I was drinking like a fish.
My dad, when I finally met him, was alcoholic.
I was on my way there. I had, you know, all these broken attachments, right? And then all of a sudden, Josiah, though, realizes I have a choice.
Okay. And that choice is, is I can choose a different father not to dishonor my own dad once I can. I used to hate my dad. Okay?
[00:19:30] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:19:30] Speaker B: Then I'm a Christian. Then I became a Christian. I just intensely disliked him.
[00:19:35] Speaker C: Right, right.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: Yes, yes.
[00:19:37] Speaker B: Yeah. And then, then, now, you know, then finally I began to forgive him and realized, well, no wonder I'm becoming just like him and I don't even know him. But, but. But the bottom line is, oh, my gosh, you know, it is when we are able. So here's Josiah, and he goes. And Josiah walked in all the ways of his father, David.
Now, that's not. That sounds like an error. Didn't that sound like an error? But wait a minute. Yeah, well, no, he's. He's, you know, he's not saying he doesn't have a dad. He's saying, I'm gonna choose to walk in a different direction. That's what you did, Bill, at those camps, you were laying out for them for a bunch of these kids. And, man, they, you know, 30 of them that came to know Christ and all those other kids that turned around, man, when you lay it out to somebody, I love you. And guess what? Jesus does. And guess what?
You can change. So I think just that powerful thing.
[00:20:35] Speaker C: I think it's. So I've been reading through the Book of Acts, which is a phenomenal book. And one of the things that keeps coming up is this idea that one of the powers of the early disciples was the fact that they were just dumb fishermen. And people were in awe of the way that they were able to live out this faith. Because the quote was, they've been with Jesus. Right. They're not scholars.
And I think that's kind of what you're talking about. Here's a guy who has been with Jesus, realized his life is forever changed. He is not the biblical scholar. And so. But he's like, I'm just going to be faithful and do what God's called me to do. And I think that's one of the lies we tell ourselves, because as guys, we have an ideal in our head, and then we feel like we have to measure up to that ideal, whatever that might be, or we give up on the ideal, and we're like, I'm just going to be a retrobate. Right?
[00:21:19] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:20] Speaker C: And what scripture is inviting us to is like, no, no, no, no. You can be a dumb fisherman and still impact the world.
[00:21:26] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:21:26] Speaker C: Like, you don't need to be an M. Div. You don't need to be. That's my. That's my soapbox baby. You don't need to have a theological degree. You just be someone who's been with Jesus and watch what he will do in and through your lives to change not just your life, but the lives beyond. And one of the encouragements I want to have is I agree totally with what you're saying about, like, hey, take your kids out. Absolutely.
[00:21:49] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:49] Speaker C: But one of the things I'm beginning to realize as all of my kids have graduated now is this.
You as a follower of Christ, invest in their friends too.
[00:21:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:58] Speaker C: Because it would have been nearly impossible for you to stand up, go to the front of that theater, give your life to Christ and be alone. God doesn't call us to be alone. God gives us a brotherhood of guys. And if you, as a dad, just a dumb fisherman who's following Jesus is able to invest in the friends of your kids as well as your kid, you are surrounding them with a brotherhood or a sisterhood that will encourage them in the faith beyond what they're saying. And that's. I think that's a part of your story that I just really want to highlight for our listeners of, like, hey, it's not. First off, we all have baggage. We all have things that God has forgiven. It's not to be hidden. It's be. It's. It's there to declare how good and faithful God is. We don't over celebrate it. But then to realize the encouragement that can be to the kids. Because even if they do have a dad, doesn't mean the dad's involved. Even if they do have a dad, doesn't mean that the dad is following Christ the way that you're following Christ. And so to have that is so huge.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: Oh, I agree. And I love John. I feel like I may be adding to your story, but I don't think I am, is just like Josiah, just like John. You. You looked at a different example. Like, Josiah did have the choice to go, hey, I'm just gonna be like my dad, or I'm gonna choose to look beyond that and say, no, that's the man I want to be. Like, yes, absolutely. Follow me as I follow Christ.
[00:23:17] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:23:18] Speaker A: This whole idea of walking, and I love it because even as you talked, I think it's in 1st Thessalonians 2, 8. If I'm wrong, forgive Me. But it said we, not. We didn't just share the gospel, but our very lives.
And we so many times deny the reality of just spending time with people.
[00:23:32] Speaker C: Correct.
[00:23:33] Speaker A: When I don't know all the scriptures, but I'm going to. I'm going to love you the way that Jesus would love you and let that supersede. And then the truth is there. That's the thing. I was talking to someone. I said, the truth is baked into us.
We're just feeding them the bread that we had baked into us of the truth of the gospel, and they're gonna see it. And so I love that you're saying that. And so that led you from there to now being an author and a speaker, which obviously was only like a year and a half later. Right. I mean, that was all it took.
[00:24:00] Speaker B: Right.
[00:24:01] Speaker A: And so go for it.
[00:24:04] Speaker B: No, no, no, no. Go ahead. Yeah, yeah.
[00:24:06] Speaker A: Well, no, I was just gonna say. I was gonna say, I mean, because you moved from this. This broken reality to God has more for me. Share a little bit about that journey of. Because now you've written a few books.
Broken the Blast, correct?
[00:24:18] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:24:20] Speaker A: But so. So share a little bit how that. How that came to. How that came. Came to be.
[00:24:25] Speaker B: Well, I mean, you know, I sucked at school, so my twin brother, you know, got a full ride to Indiana. He's an MD, PhD.
Really smart. I called him the other day. He runs a thing called TGen, the Translational Genomics Institute. I go, hey, what do you.
[00:24:43] Speaker C: As one does.
[00:24:44] Speaker B: Yeah. I go, hey, words that all of
[00:24:46] Speaker C: us are very familiar with. And I was. I heard you speak. And I'm like, oh, I know. Exactly.
[00:24:51] Speaker A: Is he speaking in tongues?
[00:24:52] Speaker C: He is, yeah. Let me translate that for you. Really smart dude. Smart guy doing things that. Yeah, yeah. All right, keep going.
[00:24:58] Speaker A: Sorry.
[00:24:58] Speaker B: So no, so it was like, you know, I called him the other day, and I go, hey, what are you working on? And he goes, you wouldn't understand.
You know, so.
[00:25:07] Speaker A: Take that, John.
[00:25:08] Speaker B: Yeah, but. But I'll tell you the thing that changed our. You guys are so right. Okay, now listen to. Listen to this quote. This is kind of a amazing quote I just heard.
None of us, including me, ever do great things, but we can all do small things with great love, and together we can do something wonderful. Now that's Mother Teresa.
[00:25:31] Speaker C: Okay, okay.
[00:25:32] Speaker B: And it is small things CS Lewis talks about. It is small things that turn us from a heavenly either into a heavenly or hellish creature. So there's this deep sense, I think, that you guys were talking about Is, you know, again, show up. Do the small things reach out to those other kids around you?
You know, that's brilliant. Because.
Because broken attachment, man.
I'm telling you, there. There are so many kids that are so lonely and hurting, and.
And. And so, again, yeah, just. Just start small. But those small things, with great love, his love, you know, is just amazing.
[00:26:14] Speaker C: And I'm going to jump on those coattails because I agree with them wholeheartedly. And, you know, the way that Jesus talked about it. So it's the last supper, it's John 13, and he's kind of having these last words of wisdom with his disciples. And one of the things he says in verse 13, obviously, he says this new command, I give you, love each other. And then he goes a step further and he tells you, this is why you and the church need to know how to love each other. Well, because the world will know you're my disciples because you actually love each other.
[00:26:40] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:26:41] Speaker C: And I think I want to encourage guys, if you don't know where to start, start at your local church, because I can't tell you how many local churches struggle to love each other. Well, they're there for the message, they're there for the worship, but they don't know how to be in intimate community with each other and love each other well, so that the world will have no doubt. This is a community sold out to the blood of Jesus Christ.
[00:27:02] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I love it. I love it. John, I feel like even before we even got into your book, just the element of someone being engaged in conversation, someone being willing to just step out in faith and make that happen, created the life change in you. And what would you say, John, in all of this, before we even jump into part two, what would you say is the clear call to action you want guys to have at the end of this podcast?
[00:27:26] Speaker C: Right.
[00:27:26] Speaker A: Right now?
[00:27:27] Speaker B: Okay, well, let me go all science on you, even though my brother's the scientist, you know, so if you guys ever interview Jim Wilder.
Anyway, he's a UCLA neurobiologist and works on all this brain stuff. So he's like my brother, super smart. You know all this stuff. Well, bottom line is, guess what at ucla, they talk about. Okay, so here's to the takeaway. Ready? Okay. Love moves at the speed of joy.
[00:28:00] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:00] Speaker B: And love moves. And guess where you see joy is in their eyes. Okay, now, now think about in Psalms, you know, where it says to the Lord, in the presence of the Lord is fullness of joy. Literally, in Hebrew, it's In your face.
So here's a real easy way to do it. Ready? I'm gonna take my glasses off. So when you see that kid, you go, oh, man. You know, I'm telling you, this is something, Doug Behram. This is something my mom did. My mom would do that constantly. She had to work, you know, single parent mom. She'd come home after school and when she got out of that Ford Falcon, we were so well off. Anybody remember the Ford Falcon? They blew up with the Pintos, you know. But she would look, when we came out the door, ran out to her. She looked at us like, oh, my gosh, those are my kids. You know, well, just. You don't have to do it. I mean, well, go ahead and do it. Just do it. We're, you know, just next time you see your kid, don't say anything to him. Just go, you know, and they go, what's up? Oh, nothing.
You know, if they press you, if they press you, just go. I just. Man, I'm just really glad. Glad God gave you to us, you know? I love it. It's that small. It's that small, you know, is how you look at him, you know, in your presence, Lord, in my face, you know, you want to brighten your eyes. That's just a good, easy starting point.
[00:29:20] Speaker A: Oh, I love it. It just feels like this idea that man, just like the Lord, the lights in us, we just need to delight in the others. I believe that's the clear call to action. The little things, the lighting and the little things about our kids, engaging the heart of those around us and seeing the impact that that makes. Because just like I said, we haven't even gotten into the minutiae of the book. And like the theological behind this, other than man, you engage someone engaged your heart, your heart was changed and thereby your world has changed. And so for those of you listening, I think the clear call to action is man. Find ways to delight in others around you.
[00:29:58] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:29:58] Speaker A: And that is showing the hope of Jesus as you as a follower of Jesus. Like we said, the gospel is already baked into you. You have an opportunity to share hope in ways that you don't even think are that valuable.
[00:30:08] Speaker C: Love it.
[00:30:09] Speaker A: I love it. And so well, John. Hey, guys, stay tuned. We are going to have part two with John this next week. And so stay tuned, John. And we'll.
