Show Notes

After a short hiatus and our Best of Series, the guys are back with a brand-new episode of the Known Legacy Podcast!

This summer has given us plenty of time to slow down, listen, and dig deeper into what God is teaching us through His Word. In this episode, we dive into some powerful lessons from Acts and the story of Elijah in 1 Kings, exploring what God's Word has to say about faith, obedience, courage, and what it looks like to follow Him when life doesn't go the way we expected.

As we head into the second half of 2026, the question is simple: What are you going to do with the time God has given you?

If you want to make the rest of 2026 count and grow into the man God has created you to be, this episode is for you.

The entire podcast is Question of the Day. [00:02:31] Speaker B: Question of the Day. [00:02:33] Speaker C: And it's. What were the highlights from your. Specifically, let's go a little bit deep dive into summer. What were some of the highlights and what are some of the takeaways? [00:02:41] Speaker B: Man, it's been a good summer, and I think that God has really challenged me in my journey a couple ways. One thing he told me is I have a tendency of filling up my calendar way more than I should. And I think some of that as I was going through my summer is I don't trust that God's going to do what he needs to fill it up. And I mean that pretty rawly. But, like, the idea of, like, I fill it up and then I'll get a call and someone's like, hey, can you be there? I'm like, I can't because I already filled it up with a whole bunch of stuff. And I think waiting for God's best. Yes. And I think when I, when I mean that, like, trusting in the waiting. [00:03:19] Speaker C: Right. [00:03:19] Speaker B: Trusting in the waiting. There's something about when I'm in the middle of my waiting, I forget the promises that God has put. Put on me. Like today we were doing a study in the book of Acts, and there was this moment when Jesus ascended and then there was this period of time that waited. And I did some research on that, you know, and, you know, to, to forsake the arguments, you know, essentially it's about 30 A.D. i know that Jesus was born 33 or whatever, but they're saying that in that time is about, you know, obviously the, the Sunday that, that, that he resurrected to about May 18th. [00:03:53] Speaker C: Mm. [00:03:54] Speaker B: And the rest of the disciples and the apostles were waiting, right. For about 10 days. [00:04:00] Speaker C: Yep. [00:04:01] Speaker B: But they didn't get, hey, now in 10 days I'm going to show up. It's like he just, they, he just said, go and wait for me. [00:04:07] Speaker C: Yep. [00:04:07] Speaker B: And there's this point in. I couldn't imagine day five, day six, you're like, is this going to happen? Like, is this going to be there? [00:04:13] Speaker C: Right. [00:04:13] Speaker B: And instead God shows up day 10, and these guys were just patiently waiting for God. Now that's a lot of time to not have Jesus and to say hey, this guy's coming. The Spirit, who is even better than me because I'm God in flesh. This is going to be God in the spirit, indwelling you and man, enlightening you through the. Through the truth of God's word. And it's like they had to wait for that. [00:04:36] Speaker C: Right? [00:04:36] Speaker B: But I think I struggle with waiting. I struggle with the pause of quiet and then going, okay, God, I know you're going to show up. And so the challenge I've had in myself was in the midst of those waiting, going back in the scriptures and reading the promises, he's like, because he showed up. He's like, I'm going to show up, going to do it. That's the end of the story. And then from there, it's. I'm just going to trust in that. So in my waiting, I found myself digging through the truth of the scriptures like you can. Actually, I love this. This beautiful thing called Google that you can say, what are the promises of God in the scriptures? And make it that easy and look it up and then start digging through the truth of God's word and proclaiming these truths. I'm not talking about name it and claim it. I'm talking about this is truth that God said I can hold on to those. So in my waiting, the action is I can pray just like they did. I can spend time with other believers, and I can hold onto those promises. And that's it. And so that's what I've been doing this year is really challenging myself to go, how do I wait? How do I trust God in the midst of my waiting? [00:05:39] Speaker C: I love it and in a lot of ways. So I had a sabbatical. [00:05:42] Speaker B: Yep. [00:05:43] Speaker C: And it was two months. And my two big goals for the sabbatical is one, reconnect with my family and do it well. And number two is hopefully, hopefully discover what's next. You know, I'm coming into my final quarter or final period of ministry, so to speak. You know, I'm 52, and so just trying to. It's really old, right? It is so old trying to discover, okay, God, what do you want? I've had a chance to do church planting. I've done four churches. What do you have next for me? Right. And it was so wonderful because not only do we have some great trips with the family and a wonderful time with my wife and reconnecting with her. It was odd, though, waking up every day not having a calendar full of things to do. And so one of my sub goals was I want to read through the gospels in the book of Acts. And I did, which was great. It was wonderful. And what I realized was, number one is this, the great moments with your kids are not on the expensive trips. Often they're around the dinner table or they are simply hanging out in these unexpected moments. And finally, to be available to that, because I didn't have three things going on in the back of my brain about an expansion of the church or this or this relationship that needs to be just like I was present in that moment. [00:06:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:52] Speaker C: And so experiencing that reminded me like, okay, this is a skill I need to continue to develop of how to just be present in the moment with the people that are in front of me. Which goes, you know, is really good. I think that the other thing is I realized that God is like so early on in my ministry, I had an opportunity to kind of leave full time ministry and go on the speaking circuit, so to speak. And my wife and I were processing it. And kind of the thing that God whispered to us was like, hey, you don't have to be proactive with this. [00:07:25] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:26] Speaker C: Just be in a spot when opportunities arise. Wrestle with me, make sure it's something that I'm calling you to, and then be as faithful as you can with that. So rather than being proactive, we were just waiting and to be reactive. [00:07:37] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:38] Speaker C: And I felt like there's clarity on like four different things that God might be calling me to in the future. Yeah. And. And I had that same conversation with my wife and I was like, should we pursue one of these? Or should we just say this is what God might have in store for us and we're going to wait on him and he's going to start to move us in one of these directions. And once we move in one of those directions, we're going to have confidence that this is the Lord. And so it was this wonderful opportunity to just pause. And I think that's summer at its best. Unfortunately, summer has become activities and really expensive. And as a dad who manages our budget, it's. It's always that like, oh, boy, now we're, now we're broke again. Oh, man. And it can be really hard and stressful rather than rejuvenating and just being in the presence of great believers, a great family, and with your Lord and savior. And so that was for me what summer was and was fantastic. [00:08:29] Speaker B: You know, and so. And even looking back at the summer and now as we're kind of focusing now, schools going to start. In fact, the day that this launches, school starts for My daughter for her senior year. [00:08:38] Speaker C: Can't believe it. Senior year. Are you ready for the emotions? [00:08:41] Speaker B: No, I'm not. Because it's like, I'm already seeing this checklist of, like, the first, the last, or the senior sunrise and all that stuff, and I'm like, a mess. [00:08:50] Speaker C: Dude. Real quick, do you remember when it was our senior year? It was just like, it was our senior year. [00:08:55] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:55] Speaker A: We just. [00:08:55] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:56] Speaker C: You know, and maybe you'd had a prom or something like that, unique for your senior year. [00:08:59] Speaker B: That's it. There's no. [00:09:00] Speaker C: That was there. There was no, like, first, last sunrise, first last class, first lunch, first last. It is over the top, obnoxious. [00:09:11] Speaker B: Oh, it's terrible. [00:09:12] Speaker C: It's. It's. [00:09:12] Speaker B: Yeah, it's almost too much like you can. [00:09:14] Speaker C: And then. [00:09:14] Speaker B: And I think for most parents out there, take a breath, like, you're not failing if you've missed 90% of these. Like, yes. Like, I mean, I remember it was like, congratulations, you, like, graduated. Go get a job. You know what I'm saying? [00:09:25] Speaker C: Like, right. [00:09:26] Speaker B: Like, what are you going to do in your career? [00:09:27] Speaker C: You know? [00:09:28] Speaker B: And so. [00:09:28] Speaker C: And you know what's amazing is all three of my kids that have graduated, not one of them have ever referenced the first, last. They all referenced great friendships. [00:09:35] Speaker B: Yes. [00:09:36] Speaker C: And wonderful moments that had nothing to do with planning from administration. It was always like, I remember we all got a pint of ice cream and we sat on the playground and we just talked and reminisced about our kid childhood and stuff like that. [00:09:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. [00:09:48] Speaker C: That's what it needs to be. [00:09:49] Speaker B: Exactly. And so I think as we look at the summer and then go, man, there's things we've learned this summer, I would say, as we start focusing on the fall, like, what are some things that you and me, man, as we look at the fall, how do we want to do it differently than we did this summer? Like, what do we take that we learned this summer and move into the fall? And I think for me, a lot of it is being so close to the Lord. The one thing the Lord's taught me this this year is to slow down. You know, when we first started this ministry, it was like, go, go, go. Like, everywhere. Like, God, is this what you have for us? What's happening? [00:10:22] Speaker C: You have to hustle. [00:10:23] Speaker B: Yeah. And now I feel like God is like, I just want you to be still. It's funny. Like, Psalm 40, 46, 10 is one of my favorite verses. You know, be still and know that I'm God. [00:10:32] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:10:32] Speaker B: And the whole idea of cease striving. And I'm like, okay, we. There is a moment to say, is this real? Like, did I do the right thing and did I have some bad pizza one night? But no, it's like, okay, no, now that it's there, it's like, okay, are you going to listen to me and be obedient to his voice? But I think that that, that supersedes everybody. That is. That is students, that is adults, that is. That is grandparents that are like, okay, it's the fall again. [00:10:57] Speaker C: Right. [00:10:57] Speaker B: How can I do this differently? And I think for me, the challenge in my life is to trust God with that timing and lean into his voice. [00:11:07] Speaker C: Right. [00:11:08] Speaker B: Elijah is one that comes up. You know, it's like he just fought the 400 prophets of Baal, had a huge victory. We had a really good summer. I would say this was a very fruitful summer for known legacy enjoyment. Yeah. [00:11:19] Speaker C: Correct. [00:11:19] Speaker B: But then you get those weary moments and you get discouraged and the phone gets quiet, or you finally have a minute to pause. And me and you are doers. We are like, run to the next thing. Like, even now. We're doing this for our wives. Running for our wives. Exactly. Exactly. But God has told me, bill, I need you to stop trying to just make things happen. I need you to be present. And so as we're sitting there now in our goal as fathers, as men to God. Okay, what do I want the fall to look like if we bring ourselves to, like, December? I would say I want to be a man that was very sensitive to God's voice through all of this. [00:11:57] Speaker C: Yes. [00:11:58] Speaker B: And so how am I doing that? And I keep finding myself going, I got to get in the truth every day. But the other thing that. That I've noticed is I've got to get into community. [00:12:07] Speaker C: Right. [00:12:07] Speaker B: Because you. You have helped me with this. We have both walked through, like you talked about the book of Acts. And I Love Acts 4:13, where he says that these were common, everyday men. [00:12:16] Speaker C: Yes. [00:12:17] Speaker B: But yet the only thing that's different is they'd been with Jesus. [00:12:19] Speaker C: Yes. [00:12:20] Speaker B: Does that make sense? [00:12:21] Speaker C: Oh, 110%, yes. [00:12:23] Speaker B: And digging into that and going, God, I just. I don't want to look at the validation of what I. What I can maybe even bring to the table. But God, what can you bring to the table through me? [00:12:32] Speaker C: Right. [00:12:33] Speaker B: You know? [00:12:33] Speaker C: Yeah. And just that whole idea of being with Jesus, what. What I found fascinating was, so, again, my goal was to go through the four gospels in the book Acts over my sabbatical. And what I noticed Is the notes that I was writing changed over time, because when I first sat down, and this is part of the challenge of being in church work is it was always about how to apply it to others, how to teach it, how. What are the insights, what were the three things that I'd pull from this? And it was always about others. And it was about a month in that all of a sudden my notes shifted dramatically, and it was more like, hey, God, help me be someone who knows you. Help me be someone who, you know, receives your forgiveness. Well, help me. And so it was much more personalized. And I realized for me, in the fall, that's what I want to continue. It's like, have Bible prep time, be Bible prep time, but don't corrupt my own personal time with God, where he's just speaking to me as his kid, letting me know. It's kind of like the problem that I think a lot of dads have with kids in sports. Right. And there's a moment, and probably in junior high, where you no longer are coach. You have to become just a cheerleader and a dad on the sidelines. Yeah. And it's hard for some dads to make that. And you can hear them in the stands because they're still coaching their kid. [00:13:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:50] Speaker C: The kids a hundred yards away on the middle of the field with everyone happening, everything happening, everyone yelling at them, the coaches yelling at him. And then you have the dad son, and you're like, dude, just be a cheerleader. Just let the coaches coach and just be a cheerleader. And that for me is like, okay, there's times that I need to be in the word for the others, but there's times that I just need to be encouraged by God, myself. And that, for me, is the biggest takeaway. If I can figure that out over the next years of my life, I feel like it's going to be some of the best years still to come. [00:14:22] Speaker B: You know, there was a movie a long time ago, Friday Night Lights, and I watched that, and I remember we were moving to Midland, Texas, at the time. So I was like, what are we getting ourselves into here? We did not do football. Like, we did this in, like, in, like, no. [00:14:36] Speaker C: 1 New York. Like, Texas. [00:14:38] Speaker B: And. And Tim. Tim McGraw plays his dad, who's not wholesale. Him dad. No. And I think in the movie, it's dramatized, obviously, but, you know, at the end of the movie, he. His son, they lose the game. And I mean, the whole. The whole movie, he's been like a jerk to his son. And I don't know if this is true, but I like the analogy of it, of this dad who then gets to the field and grabs his son and gives him a hug and they just lost the game. But this moment, what I saw in there, was a dad who finally delighted in his boy. [00:15:12] Speaker C: Yes. [00:15:13] Speaker B: And I see this in us, guys, as we journey as a child of God. God delights in us, right? He celebrates who we are because we can't bring anything to the table anyways. [00:15:25] Speaker C: Right. [00:15:25] Speaker B: You know, I mean, like, it's not exactly like we have this giant, you know, great desire of like, oh, my gosh, you have so much to offer here. It's. God delights in us, right? And we have an opportunity in that to say, God, I just want to delight in you. I want you. Like, I know that you delight in me, but God, I want to delight in you as well. [00:15:42] Speaker C: Correct. [00:15:43] Speaker B: And so there's this beauty of going, do we realize that God delights in us? So before we start this process in, you know, from August to, like, December to go, this is who I want to be. Does it start with the point of I'm trying to prove this to God, or does it start with God, I know you delight in me, so therefore I'm going to walk in that delight. [00:16:03] Speaker C: Right? [00:16:03] Speaker B: I would pray that we, you know, scripture says that for the joy that was set before me endured the cross. It isn't. We can't bring anything to the table anyways. [00:16:11] Speaker C: Right? [00:16:11] Speaker B: So for us to now walk in this, it's not a. Okay, so God will be satisfied in us. No, it's so that we would look and go, God, you are satisfied in me because of the blood of Jesus. Now I get to walk on. How do I hear your voice? [00:16:24] Speaker C: Right? [00:16:24] Speaker B: And being led directly by him. So as I, as I'm walking towards this God, it's not. I want to hear your voice so that you're happy with me. You already are. Which I don't, I still don't get because I'm a wretched trash bag sometimes. [00:16:38] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, me too. [00:16:39] Speaker B: But there is this moment to go, God, I want to be used by you so that I can therefore pour out to others. You know, Next week we're going to hear from John Trent and he talked about this guy who just spent time with him, right? And John even talks about, in his book about that, like the delight in his eyes. I want to get so close to Jesus that he looks at me and [00:16:57] Speaker C: goes, you're my kid and I want [00:17:00] Speaker B: to live in that. And guys, we want you to live in that want you to have this moment. So looking at your life and letting this be a benchmark for the rest of the year to say, what can I do differently? What did I learn this year? [00:17:10] Speaker C: Right. [00:17:11] Speaker B: And what can I do differently? You know? [00:17:13] Speaker C: Right. And I would say that, that for me is my, the call to action for us, I think. And Bill, I want to hear your call to action. But. But I think maybe summer's coming to a close. [00:17:22] Speaker B: Yes. [00:17:23] Speaker C: Everything's ramping up. I get it. Back to school stuff is crazy. Find some time. Go to the garage, go to the back porch, go someplace and just find some alone time and just reflect on what was worked in the summer, what maybe were some missed opportunities in the summer. Don't beat yourself up, move on. Forgiveness of God. But then to identify like, okay, what's one thing that in the fall I can really invest in to make the biggest impact, first and foremost in my relationship to Jesus and second, my relationship to my wife and my kids. [00:17:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:17:53] Speaker C: And see what, and then identify that, write that down, get a brother, let them know, and then move forward, you [00:17:58] Speaker B: know, And I think one way that we can do that is we have a Wake Up Guide and seven Day Reset that is right below this. So right now, as you're listening to this, go down to the session notes, click the link for the Wake Up Guide and seven Day Reset. It's a great assessment of where you are and where you want to be in. It's seven days, a seven day devotional. You could do them all in the same day if you want to be an overachiever. But I would challenge you. Take seven days and get to hear from the voice of God again. It's a free resource for you. We'd love you to be a part of that. So make sure that you guys do that. I think for my call to action is that I would just like you said, get close to God is. I'd make my mornings a priority with Jesus. It's before I pick up anything else. [00:18:36] Speaker C: Yes. [00:18:37] Speaker B: I pick up the truth of God's word. I don't, I don't pick up social media. I don't look at my emails to go, God, I want to make you my first priority. [00:18:44] Speaker C: Yes. [00:18:44] Speaker B: And I would say, guys, in that pinch point, even now, ask yourself, what do I run to first? And if it's not God's word, let it be God's word, because that is what's going to change everything. Like, just like I said, when you're going to hear from John next week. The moments are so valuable. But, guys, how can we be there for our kids if we're not there soaking up the truth of God's word first? Paul said, follow me as I follow Christ. And so, guys, that's probably the biggest call to action this week, is to challenge yourself to assess it and go as we get started, let this just be one of your many resources. And guys, if we can help in that. Infooownlegacy correct.org we want to be a part of your journey, and we have a lot of options. We'll put those all below, but keep get in the truth, get in the word. You will not change if you're not focused on God's word. [00:19:27] Speaker C: Correct. [00:19:28] Speaker B: Nothing else will change, you know, positive. [00:19:29] Speaker C: Because he's the one changing you. He's the one doing the action. [00:19:32] Speaker B: Exactly. So that's our challenge. That's our call to action this week. Guys, we are excited to be back, man. We're excited to bring you some more amazing guests. We got some great guests coming up over the next the next month or so, and we cannot wait to see what God does in and through you in this semester.
