What do you do when someone asks who you'd bring on the trip of a lifetime — and you realize you don't have a guy? Bill and Travis tackle the growing epidemic of male isolation with something rare: an actual step-by-step plan. Drawing from Known Legacy's own survey of 125 men — where 119 said they want deeper male relationships — they walk through exactly how to start: pray for 4-5 guys, find a simple way to connect (even just a group text), invite them to coffee with no agenda, and eventually get them around a "campfire" to talk about faith. The best part? You don't need to be a Bible scholar to do it. You just need to be willing to go first. Wake Up. Gear Up. Come Alive.

[00:01:57] Speaker C: If you don't have community, it's the best way to get started to jump in. [00:02:00] Speaker B: One of the guys from my church is like, dude, he is a fanboy like none other on that adrenaline shot. He's never misses, man. [00:02:06] Speaker C: I love him and he's great. To kind of start things Right. That link will be provided below as well. Man, I am excited about today, and I'm excited, man, about what you're about to say. [00:02:52] Speaker B: Question of the day. [00:02:53] Speaker C: Question of the day. [00:02:55] Speaker B: I wanted you to just flounder in that transition. Just go, where's it gonna go with. [00:02:59] Speaker C: I was like, and you're excited. Question of the day. [00:03:02] Speaker B: All right, so here's the question of the day. [00:03:04] Speaker C: Question of the day. [00:03:08] Speaker B: If there's one sport venue you could go to, what venue would it be and what event would be held there? Does that make sense? What venue and what event would be held there? So that's. That. That's open. Kyle, we started with you last time. [00:03:24] Speaker C: We get to say hi to Kyle. Oh, hey, Kyle. [00:03:26] Speaker D: Good morning. [00:03:27] Speaker C: Good morning. It's good to see you over there. [00:03:28] Speaker B: Producer in the corner. [00:03:29] Speaker C: Yes. We love him. [00:03:30] Speaker B: We do. [00:03:31] Speaker C: For me, it's not a traditional venue. I really want to go see the Masters sometime. [00:03:35] Speaker B: Oh, you took mine. [00:03:36] Speaker C: Dang it. Well, that's okay. [00:03:37] Speaker B: We can. [00:03:38] Speaker C: No, we can go together. [00:03:39] Speaker B: I'll come up with another one. [00:03:40] Speaker C: And I would love to go there. It'd be. Because there's always something about. And even whenever I've played golf in the morning, just that nice chill. And like, sometimes there's fog still on. Yes. And a little bit of dew. [00:03:51] Speaker B: Yes. [00:03:52] Speaker C: And I have a hot cup of coffee. [00:03:53] Speaker D: Yes. [00:03:54] Speaker C: And everyone's got the quiet side. No, I'm scared. [00:03:56] Speaker B: No. [00:03:56] Speaker C: No one does that for me. They're like, you can keep talking. Bill's about to hit. You'll be fine. But I Would love to go there and see it and then kind of move along with the crowd and all that fun stuff. That would be awesome. [00:04:07] Speaker B: The Masters would be absolutely one. One of the top for me. [00:04:10] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:04:11] Speaker B: But if I could go to any venue, it would be Wimbledon, soccer pitch. And wait, Wimbleton isn't so definitely tennis. [00:04:20] Speaker C: I know, but I was like, they [00:04:21] Speaker B: have a stadium at Wimbledon. [00:04:22] Speaker C: You're messing with my mind here. [00:04:24] Speaker B: No, and you might remember the. [00:04:25] Speaker C: The. [00:04:25] Speaker B: The. Any number of amazing bands from the 80s and 90s performed at Wimbledon. [00:04:30] Speaker D: Right. [00:04:31] Speaker B: And they didn't do it on the tennis court. They did it on this beautiful stadium that they have that they play soccer in. And I would love nothing more than to go and watch Arsenal play and have them play for the championship, the European Championship. [00:04:46] Speaker C: You're so far beyond me. I don't know nothing about soccer. [00:04:48] Speaker B: I think it'd just be amazing to go there and do the chants and the cheers and see them win. It would be tears in my eyes, joy in my soul, and everything would be right just for that one moment. That's awesome. That's me. How about you, Kyle? [00:05:02] Speaker D: All right. [00:05:02] Speaker C: So he's like, all right, gearing up. [00:05:05] Speaker D: I've already done it. We almost went to Brazil to see the Cowboys play Baltimore this Sunday. [00:05:13] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:05:14] Speaker D: Came. Came within an inch. But in 2014. And I brought. I brought stuff here. I brought pictures. [00:05:22] Speaker B: Oh, you do. [00:05:23] Speaker D: So. [00:05:24] Speaker C: Oh, you're gonna put them on there? [00:05:25] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:05:26] Speaker C: Oh, that's awesome. That's awesome. [00:05:27] Speaker D: So in 2014, I took my daughter over to Wembley for the Cowboys Jaguars game. [00:05:35] Speaker B: Stop it. [00:05:36] Speaker D: So we. We were sitting. Great seats. [00:05:40] Speaker C: I can't wait to see these on the screen. I'm gonna, like, go back to the video. [00:05:43] Speaker D: Got to experience that slideshow with Kyle. The best. The best thing about is when you walk in the stadium, you know, they. They do it up. [00:05:50] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:05:51] Speaker D: And. And one bridge, they had Dallas Cowboys, America's team. Yeah, I took a picture of it. I didn't take a picture of the Jaguars, and I wish I had, because it. The forgotten team said, jacksonville Jaguars believe in victory. I'm like, wow, that's a statement. [00:06:09] Speaker C: But anyway, it's like, Jacksonville. Hang in there, boys. [00:06:14] Speaker B: Oh, oh. Follow up question. Okay, so you could do that. Who would you take? What brother or what guy? We all know we would take our wives. Yeah, we take our wives. I get it. I would. What brother would you take? What guy would you take? [00:06:28] Speaker C: I would probably take. You know, and we can't use each other. Like, just. We have to use somebody. [00:06:33] Speaker B: Else Correct. [00:06:34] Speaker C: Because we're all going to be there anyways, so, you know, probably my buddy Chris. Chris Mixer. [00:06:39] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:06:40] Speaker C: I think that'd be fun to take. I know he's a good dude and I would take him. [00:06:43] Speaker B: He's a good man. I would take a guy also. Chris. Chris Dyer. And he's. He was my older brother. [00:06:48] Speaker C: The question is, which Chris would you take? [00:06:51] Speaker B: He's my older brother from another mother for sure. Grew up with him and we've reconnected over the last few years and just. I love that guy. Love him dearly. And to spend a few days in London with him and go to that [00:07:02] Speaker C: match would be London. [00:07:04] Speaker B: Phenomenal. Kyle. [00:07:07] Speaker D: I would take my buddy Vince. [00:07:09] Speaker C: Chris. Vince. No, it's kidding. [00:07:12] Speaker D: He's into sports and traveling, so we. I'd take him. [00:07:15] Speaker C: That's excellent. [00:07:16] Speaker B: Excellent. So, anyways, today's conversation for Bill, Kyle and I is, man, let's say you find yourself in a situation where that question gets posed to you and you like, oh, I don't know who I would take, because there's not really a guy in my life that I'm, like, I'm close to. That's a brother. That's an armor bearer for me. That. That guy, that Noah has my back and that would love that kind of adventure. What do you do? Like, how do you start? Because study after study after study. And Bill, I know you're working on. [00:07:43] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:07:43] Speaker A: We're. [00:07:43] Speaker B: Right now is, guys, as we age, we find isolation more and more kind of the cause of the day. Right. We've invested all of our time into our jobs, but we know those relationships are transitory because if we leave that job, all those friendships are going to be gone. [00:08:01] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:08:02] Speaker B: Right. And we have our family. Right. And the success for us as dads is when our kids move out. And now we're alone with our lovely spouse, which is great. I love you, Tara, but we need more than that. [00:08:13] Speaker A: Right? [00:08:14] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:08:14] Speaker B: So, Bill, what do you. What are you finding in your study and what are you seeing? [00:08:17] Speaker C: Well, what I'm, you know, you're there. There's two roads of thought, I think, that happen in that moment. One guy just stays in isolation. [00:08:24] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:25] Speaker C: And the other guy is like, I've got to do something. And I want to speak to the. I've got to do something, guys. I think that's the biggest thing. And I would. I would phrase it this way, get guys around a campfire and we'll break that down a little bit as we talk through this. But the value of Getting guys together. And then, that's great, Bill. How do we do it? And I really. This is the challenge that I'm seeing over and over again. Our guys almost. It seems like we're in a world that people don't want this. But in all reality, every guy that I talk to, and I'm sorry, they were. We've done a study in 125 guys, 119 said that they want this. There were six guys so far that said that they don't want this kind of relationship. So there's overwhelming odds. [00:09:06] Speaker B: Post that on the bottom of this so that guys that are listening, if they want to take that survey, would love for you to take survey. So we get a really full, you know, 300, 500 guys that. [00:09:16] Speaker C: Oh, that'd be amazing. And so. But what we're finding is there's an overwhelming desire, even in guys who are saying, no, I'm good. I'm going to be on my own. I mean, longevity shows it, like, life longevity impact in our world about who we are. If we have somebody. In fact, that's something like if the wife dies first, like, the husband usually dies pretty quick after. [00:09:37] Speaker B: Right? [00:09:37] Speaker C: If the husband dies first, generally the wife is, like, living her best life after that. I mean, I'm not saying that really. She's like, I'm fine, free. I'm going to everything. I'm gonna play mahjong every day or whatever. [00:09:47] Speaker B: Mahjong? What's up with mahjong? [00:09:49] Speaker C: That's a whole nother conversation. But there's something about that. I believe at the core of me that most guys want to connect. So if you're out there, you're going, I want to connect. The rest of this podcast is based on you having some tangible realities of how to do this. I think the first thing this is going to sound so simple is I need you to pray for four to five guys in your life. Yes, there's a circle of men in our lives that we bump into. It could be a guy at. At the coffee shop. It could be a guy at work. It'd be a guy at church. It could be a guy that we play golf with or whatever. But to start to say, God, I'm going to take the next couple weeks and I'm going to literally just pray over these guys and start to say, God, help me to make a deeper connection with them. Yep, we're not walking to the guy yet. We're not going. I need to make a deeper connection with you. Please don't do that. Exactly. [00:10:35] Speaker B: Please don't, don't do that. [00:10:37] Speaker C: And, and we're talking about just. We just talked in the last. About walking with God. It's an intentional moment to go, God, I'm going to be praying over these men because I. You've. You've brought into my mind. [00:10:47] Speaker B: Right. [00:10:47] Speaker C: So God, bring, bring some men to my mind that I can connect with and start to pray for them and ask God to soften their heart and make a tangible connection with them on your own. Because some guys are just. They're not. They're never going to go, hey, I need to connect with you. So ask God for boldness to make a connection with those men. [00:11:05] Speaker B: And I'd say step number two, I don't know what your step number is gonna be. Mine is figure out a simple way or something simple to connect over. [00:11:11] Speaker C: Yes. Right. And it's my number two, so that's great. [00:11:14] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, look at that. [00:11:15] Speaker C: We are, like, connected. [00:11:16] Speaker A: Yes. [00:11:17] Speaker C: Like, we've done this for a while. [00:11:18] Speaker B: I know. It's like, it's like. So Bill, Bill's. The adrenaline shot, phone call kind of thing is one of the things that inspired me on this. And so I looked at my own life and I'm like, okay, who, who, who are my brotherhood. Right. And the reality is most of my brotherhood, we've connected via text message. That's the way we connect 99% of the time. [00:11:39] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:11:39] Speaker B: It's through memes, it's through ribbing each other, it's through fantasy football that we're doing through text messaging and everything else. And what will happen is as you kind of fall into that text messaging stuff. Yeah. Now you all of a sudden, hey, my wife is in the hospital. She has really bad pains. Can you guys pray for me? And so it becomes a very natural way to deepen that relationship. So to be very specific, what I did is because I realized I needed guys local. A lot of my guys are global. I needed local guys. And I prayed about four or five guys at my church. And I'm like, okay, I need to connect with these guys. [00:12:15] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:12:15] Speaker B: And so one of the guys was doing like a little daily Devotion is like 500 words, literally takes 30 seconds to read. And I said, okay. [00:12:23] Speaker C: So I texted each one of us [00:12:24] Speaker B: like, hey, in September, we're starting this group and it's going to be us. And we're just going to text each other every day what we think about the Bible study, what we think about the devotion. That's all it's going to be. Yeah. So we started that and some of the guys will chime in every day. Some of the guys will chime in every other day. Some of the guys will chime in once a week. Doesn't matter. But when one of the guys, all of a sudden this week was like, hey, my wife is really struggling with some stuff, and my daughter is in Mexico for a wedding on the west coast where the hurricane is. Could you just pray for them? [00:12:52] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:12:52] Speaker B: Every single guy lit up within a moment, praying, absolutely, 100%. You need anything, let me know. Da, da, da, da. And I'm like, that was a very natural outspring of a very simple. We're gonna connect via text messages on a regular basis, right? [00:13:07] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:13:07] Speaker B: You don't have to over spiritualize it. You don't have to over complicate it, which we love to do as guys. [00:13:13] Speaker C: Oh, goodness. Yeah. [00:13:13] Speaker B: You just have to keep it simple and say, who are some guys that I would love to be in a techstart with that would probably make me laugh more often than not. [00:13:21] Speaker C: Yeah. And then I think in that is an invite into your life. So what I would say is to. Then you got these four or five guys. You're talking to these guys. And the next step is after you've prayed for them, as you've prayed for boldness from God to say, God, give me boldness. Because then there's an action that we take is we make a phone call or we send a text, hey, man, I want to go grab a coffee with you. Hey, man, I want to go grab lunch. Can we go grab lunch? This week, very few men reach out just to say, hey, I'm thinking about you, bro. [00:13:49] Speaker B: Right. [00:13:49] Speaker C: Most guys want something from you. So there's that feeling of you get on the call agenda. Yeah. What do you want to go with? No agenda, going, hey. And then you just ask them, hey, can you just tell me about your life? [00:14:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:14:01] Speaker C: And so you've got this moment so far in your journey that you've been praying for this guy. You reach out to him through text, through email, and you say, I want to grab coffee with you. And you do that with all four or five of those guys. [00:14:13] Speaker B: Yep. [00:14:14] Speaker C: And then from there, when you're done with that, that simple task, you invite them over to your house, and you're like, hey, this is Tom. Tom, I'd love you to share your story with these guys and have each guy share their story. And what I like about this journey is that the first three steps that we're talking about have nothing to do with. I don't know enough about the Bible. I'm not educated enough. I don't know all the Greek words or the derivatives of all of this. I am simply inviting men into the journey and then inviting them into my backyard. And so when I mean the campfire, like Kyle said this earlier, it's the proverbial campfire. It can be a campfire. We have a buddy who meets in a garage, Right. And they hang out and they call out to Joe. Call out to Joe, and they do something. They do a study, but it wasn't. And Joe would say, I'm not some Bible scholar. [00:14:58] Speaker B: Nope. [00:14:58] Speaker C: But he had the guts to make phone calls, to pray over these guys, to invite them in. [00:15:04] Speaker B: And I would wager to bed. If we look at the statistics, probably one in five guys is going to be the initiator of something like this. [00:15:11] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:15:12] Speaker B: Right. And so you may be the four other guys that are like, dude, the idea of doing this is, nope, not going to happen. But I would wager to bet there's some guy that you bump into that is that one guy in five that will initiate this. And so the question is, when he reaches out, what's your answer? [00:15:27] Speaker C: What are you going to do? Yeah. [00:15:28] Speaker B: Are you going to be like, dude, absolutely, I'm in. What do you need? Because at the end of the day, most of us, to do what God's calling us to do, we need an armor bearer that's behind us that says, I'm with you heart and soul. [00:15:38] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:15:38] Speaker B: And so this guy, if he's stepping out to do this and the first call he makes is a no, he's going to be really gun shy. But if the first one's like, dude, I'm all in. Who else do we need to get on this? [00:15:48] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:15:49] Speaker B: Then all of a sudden, he's like. He's emboldened. He's like, dude, I got an armor bear. We're going to freaking take down the Philistines. Let's go. [00:15:54] Speaker C: Let's do it. Let's make it happen. [00:15:55] Speaker B: And so you might be that first follower, you might be that first guy to affirm what's going on and be like, I'm all in. Whatever it takes, I'm with you. You do it. I'm with you back. You know, they'll never just be one guy around the campfire. There'll be at least two guys. And we're hoping we get five or six. [00:16:11] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:16:11] Speaker B: Right. [00:16:11] Speaker C: And then from. From this point on, exactly. Like, it takes courage. And then you have these guys in his backyard. What do I do with it. I need you to picture this. If you're out there and you're going, I don't know what to do. I don't have to study. I don't know all the answers. I need you to realize that you are simply the Yoda. You're simply the Morpheus. That's all you are is you are like you. That's kind. [00:16:35] Speaker B: You're only Yoda. But I'm saying like a Master Jedi. [00:16:39] Speaker C: The mark a little higher. But what I'm saying is you don't have to have conversation. [00:16:43] Speaker B: We have. [00:16:44] Speaker C: Exactly. You don't have to have. But you don't have to have all the answers. Like, if you go back to that story. [00:16:49] Speaker B: Luke, Luke. [00:16:50] Speaker C: Luke had answers from Yoda. Morpheus. [00:16:53] Speaker B: Keep going. Keep going. [00:16:53] Speaker C: All Morpheus did was offer offer truth to the person. [00:16:57] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:57] Speaker C: He didn't have all the answers. He just said, I see value in you. [00:17:00] Speaker B: That's a Republican. Or you can be a Democrat. [00:17:02] Speaker C: Oh, that's all. Stop it. Stop it. The purple pill. So who knows? But what I'm saying is, is you're just offering them. You don't have to know it all. Maybe. Maybe Yoda's a little high of a standard. Morpheus was more. I see value in you, and I want to journey with you. [00:17:17] Speaker B: Well. [00:17:17] Speaker C: And I'll. [00:17:18] Speaker B: And with that to kind of wrap up the conversation. [00:17:21] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:17:21] Speaker B: Here's the other posture that I think we need to set in our hearts. Every guy we know is an expert in something that you're probably not an expert in. [00:17:27] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:17:28] Speaker B: And if you can find that, the dude will never stop talking. I promise you. I've yet to have a conversation with someone when I find out what they're actually an expert in. And they have a passion for whatever their hobby is, and you get them to about that and you're actually inquisitive about it. They will talk for hours. Because they've spent years becoming the expert and they've been longing to share this expertise with someone. [00:17:48] Speaker C: Right. [00:17:49] Speaker B: If It's World War II. Oh, really? What's your thought on World War II? Well, let me tell you what's. You know. [00:17:54] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:17:54] Speaker B: They will go for hours. [00:17:55] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:17:56] Speaker B: On it. [00:17:56] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:17:56] Speaker D: Here's my stamp collection, dude. [00:17:59] Speaker B: By the way, if you're doing stamps, it's time to find a new hobby. [00:18:02] Speaker C: Yes. None of us said stamps. That's definitely not. [00:18:05] Speaker B: Maybe pairing up duolingo and start learning another language, like Bill. So dos elingo. [00:18:14] Speaker C: I feel like I'm working with ADD Here, people. All right. No. So I would say to finish this up, you're going, okay, I want to start taking this a little bit deeper. This isn't a. You need to spend the next 15 hours every week studying God's word to get some truth. You can open a verse, you can open a chapter and go, hey, we're going to go through Genesis 1. And did something jump out to you? [00:18:36] Speaker B: Right. [00:18:36] Speaker C: It doesn't have to be deep. In fact, if you're struggling with this and you're like, I don't know where to start. Infoownlegacy.org, we have there. There's enough information we. I have a bunch of devotionals that I'll be more than happy to mail you that are simple one or two question things that just make it easy that aren't some heady, lofty thing. Because you might go, well, I don't know enough. Well, all you're doing practical. Yeah. Just like Morpheus is you're inviting them into the journey and you're learning along with them. You don't have to know it all. Someone has to be the initiator to get this campfire started. [00:19:08] Speaker B: And here's the deal. If you're someone who doesn't like to read and the idea of reading a devotion or whatever, there are plenty of great little videos. [00:19:15] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:19:16] Speaker B: That you can just send via text, say, hey, watch this video. What do you think? [00:19:19] Speaker C: Exactly. [00:19:20] Speaker B: That's all you need to do. And guys will watch a 3 minute, 5 minute video, even a 20 minute video if it's something that's interesting. [00:19:25] Speaker C: Yes. [00:19:26] Speaker B: And be able to process and then be able to share on that. That video. So use the technology for your. Keep it simple. Just keep it simple. [00:19:32] Speaker C: Yeah, right. [00:19:33] Speaker A: There's. [00:19:33] Speaker C: And so. And if you need any help with this, we want to help you. We're not just telling you go and do this. We want to help you. So info.org.org guys, we believe in you because we're seeing the need for so many men that are drowning in loneliness. [00:19:45] Speaker B: And we're seeing guys step up. [00:19:46] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:19:46] Speaker B: Have success. And all of a sudden they're finding that they have a brotherhood that if they find themselves in a pickle or they find themselves needing to hide a body. I'm sorry. Or they find themselves in the hospital. They have a brotherhood that's going to come alongside them and be with them and care for them and care for the things that they love and care for. [00:20:01] Speaker C: I immediately went to Goodfellas for some reason with that. So, guys, we believe in you. We want to see you help other men come alive. But don't make it so hard. Don't make it so difficult. It's a lot easier than you think it is. [00:20:12] Speaker B: Correct? [00:20:13] Speaker C: Be the Morpheus, maybe not the Yoda. [00:20:20] Speaker B: So bad we believe. God bless you guys. [00:20:23] Speaker C: Have yourselves a great week, guys. We'll talk to you soon. [00:20:28] Speaker A: Thanks for listening to the Known Legacy podcast. We'd love to hear from you. So email us your questions or comments to info at Nolegacy.
