[00:02:31] Speaker C: French fries. French fries. It always comes down to food for us. Kyle, how are you doing, man? [00:02:37] Speaker D: Good. Good morning. [00:02:38] Speaker B: Hey, question. Okay. Finish what? Kyle, it's good to have you here. [00:02:42] Speaker D: Thank you. Thank you. [00:02:43] Speaker B: Thank our producer. Anyways, question of the day. [00:02:45] Speaker C: Question of the day. [00:02:47] Speaker B: So it's really simple. I don't even know where this came from, but I think, yeah, I probably do, but I'm not going to get into it anyways. If you could start a new hobby today. [00:02:55] Speaker C: Yes. [00:02:56] Speaker B: Or take your hobby to the next level, what would it be and why? [00:03:00] Speaker C: A whole nother level. [00:03:01] Speaker B: A whole nother level. [00:03:04] Speaker C: Kyle, what would you call. I know we're both like, kyle, what about you? [00:03:07] Speaker D: Wow. [00:03:07] Speaker B: I have like four, by the way. [00:03:08] Speaker D: Throw me under it first. Well, if it's that question. [00:03:12] Speaker B: Yes. [00:03:13] Speaker D: I think I would like to spend more time on guitar. [00:03:16] Speaker B: Oh, you're already a very accomplished guitarist. [00:03:20] Speaker D: Not. Not that. [00:03:22] Speaker C: As they say in Spanish, la guitara. [00:03:24] Speaker D: Like to do more on that. [00:03:28] Speaker C: Is it el guitar or la guitar? [00:03:31] Speaker B: You know what? I don't know. [00:03:32] Speaker C: I think it's feminine. [00:03:33] Speaker B: I think you should learn new languages, Bill. [00:03:35] Speaker C: Well, that's my hobby. Like, I want to learn, so. [00:03:38] Speaker B: And that's not a hobby. That's a career builder. That's different. [00:03:42] Speaker C: But I think, you know, so you get on like, duolingo and you try it. No, Okay. [00:03:47] Speaker B: I don't. But. But that's okay. It's not my hobby. I don't. I don't. [00:03:50] Speaker C: I tried duolingo. [00:03:52] Speaker B: Yes. [00:03:52] Speaker C: And. And then when I got on there, like, I always do good. And I'm like. It says, what do you. What do you want Your, like, good? Yeah. Like, what do you want your streak to be? Seven days, 30 days. And like, I'm gonna do seven. And then literally that's the last day I do for like a month. And I'm like, I'm gonna do seven again. And so I always forget What I do, I mean, I remember that, like I keep trying more and more and I'm learning. But then you meet someone who speaks, you know, like espanol language. And I'm like, that's Spanish. Very well. For those who do know, I have learned something. I. I like lock up. And I'm like, instead, tostada. Well, yeah, I know. I was like, enchilada. I have the quesadillas. And I'm like, why are you talking to them? Like, I don't know. And I'm like, I don't know what I'm doing here. [00:04:37] Speaker B: But then I know what to do with my hands. [00:04:39] Speaker D: Yeah. No, say yeah. [00:04:41] Speaker C: Yes. But then I meet him and instead of me speaking Spanish, I'm like, hello, my name is Bill. [00:04:48] Speaker B: So you overcome the language barrier, volume [00:04:51] Speaker C: and speaking louder and more obnoxious. And I'm like. And they're like, hey, Guillermo, Esmoi loco. You know, Guillermo is William in Spanish. So at least that's what I was told in Spanish class. In espanol class. [00:05:05] Speaker B: Anyways, I will honestly say I'm While inspired, I'm also disappointed that your hobby is boring and educational based. [00:05:15] Speaker C: My life is not though. Not educational, not boring. [00:05:18] Speaker B: My hobby would be to spend more time in the dictionary to learn words [00:05:21] Speaker C: I've never learned before for fun. Bye, Bill. I'm such a scholar. [00:05:28] Speaker B: Just dumb fisherman. [00:05:29] Speaker C: That's it. That's how it goes. What about you, man? What about your hobby? [00:05:31] Speaker B: Okay, so I got a few. One is I. I think if I could do. If I could start today and money wasn't an issue. My hobby would be LPs. My hobby would be record players and records and stuff like that. I would love to deck out my office in like high fidelity. Just an amazing listening experience, right? [00:05:49] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:05:50] Speaker B: Put a nice little fan in the window so I can enjoy a pipe in there while listening to like the classic albums the way they were intended by the hand of God to be heard, you know. [00:05:58] Speaker C: You were listening to deep spins on 95.5. [00:06:02] Speaker B: Hobby number two would be a radio. No, I'm just kidding. [00:06:04] Speaker C: We are radio hosts. Kind of. [00:06:05] Speaker B: If it was an outdoor hobby, I'd be like, dude, I want to. I want to do golf again. Yeah, I can't afford it. But I know my wife and I would love to go like, we would love to be the old couple in Caddyshack where we're just swinging away and it's like, that's a peach hun, you know? And we don't even know what's going on. We don't care. But we're outside. Yes. We're getting vitamin D. And you know what? We don't care. I would love that. [00:06:27] Speaker D: And all the other people are having to pass you because you're holding up an entire course. [00:06:33] Speaker C: My. My wife would not want to play golf, but I definitely would love to play some golf. I've been told. I said I need to take lessons. That's probably another one. [00:06:40] Speaker B: It's just not a cheap hobby. [00:06:41] Speaker C: That's the thing. [00:06:42] Speaker B: It's not cheap on time, and it's not cheap in expense. [00:06:45] Speaker C: Where can I blow $180 in eight hours? I mean, that would be me. I'd be out there for eight hours. And I'm like, I don't know. The golf cart was fun. [00:06:54] Speaker B: 3. [00:06:54] Speaker C: Exactly. [00:06:56] Speaker B: Anyway, so that. [00:06:56] Speaker C: That was way easier on the Wii. You know what I'm saying? Like, so. [00:07:00] Speaker B: So beyond question of the day and kind of what's. What sparked this is. I had a fascinating conversation with someone yesterday, and it was the simple question that I think we've all wrestled with at one point in our own lives. But also, I hear a lot of guys wrestling with now that they're kind of rediscovering and reconnecting with Jesus, and they're wrestling with their careers and the vocations that they've been in. And the question is somehow phrased, how do you know what God wants you to do? Right. [00:07:26] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:07:26] Speaker B: Like, how do you know if God wants you to stay at your job? How do you know if God wants you to leave your job? And I think secretly, what we're hoping for is that God would give us some sort of burning bush experience that we would know without a shadow of a doubt that this is exactly what God would want us to do. [00:07:43] Speaker C: Like, almost like, how to take the next step that we think God wants us to take. [00:07:47] Speaker B: Correct. [00:07:47] Speaker C: Correct. [00:07:47] Speaker B: But the challenge that I think we often fall into is, number one, is God only used the burning bush once. And it was for a very specific person with a very specific, big, larger, like. [00:07:59] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:08:00] Speaker B: Cosmic calling. [00:08:01] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:08:02] Speaker B: That he really needed Moses to fully understand. [00:08:05] Speaker C: Like, listen to me. I really need you to listen right now. Like, grabbing his face. Time out. [00:08:09] Speaker B: Stop looking. Stop looking at the sheep. Look at me. [00:08:12] Speaker C: Exactly. Look at me. [00:08:13] Speaker B: Eyes right here. And. And the other part is, I think we, as humans, we love to know. We love to see where the final step of the journey is going to be. [00:08:22] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:08:22] Speaker B: And so we absolutely want to know where it's going to end. But. But often throughout Scripture. You don't see it that way. We read it that way because we go from chapter five to chapter six, and the story is concluded. We're like, oh, of course it made sense for David to do that. [00:08:35] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:08:35] Speaker B: But we don't put ourselves in the position of David in chapter five, verse one, where everything that could happen, could possibly happen is still on the table. Right? [00:08:45] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:08:46] Speaker B: And so, Bill, like, when you're dealing with guys and when you're processing and counseling guys that are wrestling with that question, what are some of the things you process through? [00:08:53] Speaker C: Man, I. You make a really good point. I think even in my own life, as I'm looking at the journey, the first thing that comes to mind is Psalm 119, 105, that his words, lamp to our feet and a light to our path. [00:09:06] Speaker B: Thy word is a lamp. [00:09:08] Speaker C: Sing it, Amy. Sing it. [00:09:10] Speaker B: And a lie unto my path. K. Tel ordered yours today. Exactly. [00:09:17] Speaker C: For 15 cents, you can have a CD or a tape or whatever. [00:09:20] Speaker B: That's Columbia House. [00:09:21] Speaker C: Columbia House. [00:09:21] Speaker B: I heard they closed, by the way. [00:09:22] Speaker C: They probably did. And I owe them, like, $760, so. [00:09:25] Speaker B: So happy there. [00:09:26] Speaker D: My penny. [00:09:27] Speaker C: I gave my penny. So. No, I do. I think that. That we take this step. But. But I think, like. Like we talked about before this. We think it's like train tracks. [00:09:36] Speaker B: Correct. [00:09:37] Speaker C: We think it's this one. If I. If I go off this one step, I'm ruined. Because. [00:09:43] Speaker B: Correct. [00:09:43] Speaker C: Because there is a reality that when you. With degrees of sin, when you. When you start to lean away, you start to drift away, you find yourself realizing, wow, I'm way off course when it comes to sin. [00:09:53] Speaker B: Yes. So one of the things that kind of ties into that. And I want you to go back to that. [00:09:58] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. [00:09:58] Speaker B: In our theology, is that if God does not condemn it or command it, you have freedom. And I think that kind of shatters that whole railroad tracks. Like, God only has one thing for me, and my job is to discover that and then not screw it up so bad that I'm removed from that track. [00:10:13] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:10:14] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's like, well, if it's not commanded or it's not forbidden. [00:10:17] Speaker C: Yep. [00:10:17] Speaker B: You know, then you have freedom. [00:10:19] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:10:19] Speaker B: And a lot of our vocations, we have a lot of freedom to live out the expression of Christ in us in a lot of different ways. So keep going. Keep going. [00:10:26] Speaker C: Yeah. So. So I think. I think, you know, I was. I was telling you guys earlier, there was this. This study that I went to at a. At a men's event at My church that I'm at. And this guy used the word with Abraham called halak, and it's only used in terms of Abraham. And it's to say he walked with God. And I love that idea that he took the next step in God. And I think a lot of times we're like, well, I'm going to take this step and I'm going to just screw this up. But the idea to go, okay, I am given this three feet, whatever, I'm going to take this step. God, I'm going to trust you. [00:11:03] Speaker B: Right? [00:11:03] Speaker C: What does that look like right now? Is there sin in my life? [00:11:06] Speaker B: Correct. [00:11:07] Speaker C: Let me fix that. Are my eyes fixed on you? Like, am I going. I really want to do what you want me to do, so I'm going to take this step. Okay, I take the step. Okay, cool. I took that step in you, right? And it's the faith thing of. It's like, it's like when we've talked about faith before, like, you, faith is the similarity of, like sitting in a chair. Like, you don't think about sitting in the chair most time you're like, okay, it's going to hold me. As I got bigger, I was like, maybe it isn't going to hold me anymore. But I realize now that I'm like, even today when we sat down here, [00:11:36] Speaker B: observation, none of us said weight loss was one of our hobbies. [00:11:39] Speaker C: Just an observ. [00:11:40] Speaker B: That's a fair. [00:11:40] Speaker C: Anyways, that's a very fair statement. [00:11:41] Speaker B: Back on track. [00:11:42] Speaker C: But when I sat down, I didn't even think about the chair. So it's the same thing with God. I'm going to move forward in you. The veracity, the energy of you, you know, and I'm not sure if I said this on here before, but be gracious to me as I say this, but we talked about the rhino and how the rhino can only see 60ft in front of them. I'm sorry, they can only see 100ft in front of them, but they run like 60 miles an hour, something like that. [00:12:06] Speaker B: Oh, wow. [00:12:06] Speaker C: And so they can only see problems. Exactly. So they run with veracity towards what they know is not a big deal for them. And I think when we get nervous with all these avenues, if I take this step, that means I'm going to be here and if I do this, I'm going to be in this direction instead to go, God, I'm going to take this next step in you. [00:12:24] Speaker B: Correct. [00:12:24] Speaker C: If I'm not supposed to take this step, stop me. [00:12:28] Speaker B: Yes, well, absolutely. That's where God's word is a light unto my feet. It's the idea of, like, back in the day, the lamp gave you enough light for the next three steps. It's not like a mag light that gives you three miles of flashlight that you can see down the road. It's literally enough for the next step. And I think with. With, you know, we. We are obsessed with what does God want us to do? And we miss that. God is more concerned about who we are becoming. [00:12:52] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:12:52] Speaker B: Less than what we are doing along the journey. And. And he. He will often. The vision that I have is it's more of a playground and less of a railroad track. [00:13:03] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:03] Speaker C: You break that down a little bit. [00:13:04] Speaker B: It's the idea of like, God has put a fence around this playground and he's like, dude, who I've called you to be is much more important than what I've called you to do. And so if you are going to be the. My light at working at Walmart, you could do that as much as working at Wabtech or as much as working at, you know, a Fortune 500 company or as much as being a CEO. [00:13:24] Speaker D: Or an Uber driver. [00:13:25] Speaker B: Or an Uber driver. Or doordasher. [00:13:27] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:13:27] Speaker B: Right. Going back to that conversation, we will [00:13:29] Speaker C: put that video right here in the link for you guys to check if you had a chance. There was a guy who we've had on who was an Uber driver. [00:13:35] Speaker B: Phenomenal story. [00:13:35] Speaker C: Amazing story. He was an Uber driver. And in that he chose to honor Jesus. [00:13:40] Speaker B: Correct. [00:13:40] Speaker C: Great example. [00:13:41] Speaker B: Because it was who he was and who God was calling him to be. Not so much do. And so my encouragement to guys that are really wrestling with what is God calling me to do? I think the first question is first and foremost, realize God's passionate most about the fruits of the spirit taking root in our lives. And if what God. What you perceive as the next step is something that will allow those fruits to continue to grow and be a blessing to others. Because fruit is a blessing for others, not for the tree itself. The fruit is for the blessing for the animals around it and for the soil around it. [00:14:11] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:14:11] Speaker B: And for the next generation. It's not for itself. [00:14:13] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:14:14] Speaker B: If you can live out those fruits and whatever the next step is with boldness and with freedom in your heart, take the next step. [00:14:20] Speaker C: Yeah, right. Yeah. [00:14:21] Speaker B: Go in that direction. And here's the great news. We have a God of second chances. And if you take a step in two weeks in, you're like, oh, that was not the direction I was supposed to go. Hallelujah. [00:14:30] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:14:30] Speaker B: He hasn't disqualified you. You haven't lost the tracks. You're not like five, you know, 100 miles away from God. He's like, I still love you. Let's go. [00:14:37] Speaker C: Well, yeah, this. And I think even in that, I love that the scriptures say that God works everything together for good to those who love the Lord. So it's this idea of like, I'm walking down this path. I didn't take the wrong step. I took a purposeful step that God wanted me to do. Because the first thing I'd say if someone who is completely going, I don't know what to do next is they just the power of prayer. And we underestimate this. Hey, God, I don't know which step to take. So I want the next step to be in you. [00:15:03] Speaker B: Yes. [00:15:04] Speaker C: And then just take the step. And then that moment, you're living in the faith of God, when again, I'll go back to Peter. When he stepped out of the boat, he had no idea what he's doing, but he was like, I want to be near you. Yes. His intention, his end intention, whatever it [00:15:18] Speaker B: takes to God near you. [00:15:19] Speaker C: Yes. And so if we're moving in that motion towards God, God, I just want to be near you. I don't know what this looks like. So, okay, I lost my job or, oh, no, my girlfriend broke up with me, or I hate my job and [00:15:35] Speaker B: as a result, I hate everything in my life. [00:15:36] Speaker C: Yeah. So I've got a bad choice in front of me. But God, I know that because God's mercy is in you every morning. We live in the character of God's grace to go, God, I'm gonna take the next step in you. And if we're purposeful with that, God, we can't screw that up. We can't mess that up if we're going. God, I want to honor you with this. [00:15:55] Speaker B: Right. And let me continue to be focused on who you are creating me to be and not be so consumed with what I do. [00:16:05] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:16:05] Speaker B: My value is no longer what I do. And that's part of the curse that God said, hey, Adam, now that you've sinned, guess what? Your toil, it's going to be a curse to you. What you do is going to be a curse to you. It's never going to be enough. And that's why Jesus. And when he comes, he says, I'm less concerned about what you do. I. I'm more concerned about who I'm creating in you to be. And that's the. That's the flip that prayer helps reorganize our thought process, helps reorganize our focus to be on the one who calls us out of the boat and says, trust me, you might walk on water. [00:16:35] Speaker C: You know, we know what some of those apostles did, but we don't have a clear calling of what their occupation was before they knew Jesus. We know a few. [00:16:43] Speaker B: Correct. [00:16:44] Speaker C: So it shows. [00:16:45] Speaker B: Not know all. [00:16:45] Speaker C: Yes. So it shows me that that's not as big of a deal as who they are in Christ. [00:16:51] Speaker B: Yes. [00:16:51] Speaker C: And so. So, I mean, I don't. I mean, like, you know, you watch, like, the chosen, and they've got, like, ideas of what each person was. Great. That's funny. Like, that's not like they would even say, that's not the gospel. [00:17:02] Speaker B: Right. [00:17:03] Speaker C: So you. So you can say, oh, well, you know, was this guy a builder or this guy? What? I mean, like, we know that Peter was a fisherman, obviously. We know that Matthew was a tax collector. [00:17:12] Speaker B: Correct. [00:17:12] Speaker C: But we don't know all of them. And so our occupation is way less of a concern other than when Jesus said, follow me, and they just walked with him. [00:17:22] Speaker B: Correct. [00:17:22] Speaker C: And so if you're taking success being the end result is, I'm going to be a doctor, I'm going to be a lawyer, I'm going to work in an oil company, I'm going to be a banker. And saying, when I get there, I'm successful. Your focus is wrong again. It's, I'm going to walk with God. And if I want those things, God, I'd like to do that. But that's not the success. The success, like you said, is, so what if you decide to walk today and tomorrow, you. You die. So are you not successful? No, you're. You've been successful in the step of saying, God, pursuing Christ, I want to honor you and letting that be our success. [00:17:55] Speaker B: Yep. [00:17:56] Speaker C: And then removing the stress and the playground versus the train tracks. [00:18:00] Speaker B: And I think part of that is. Is talking with kids that have recently graduated from college. They are. They are. They're almost frozen with fear that they're going to make the wrong decision with their career. And so it's almost difficult for them to apply for anything. Because you're like, I don't. Because they're seeing it as like, this is the rest of my life. And I'm like, it's not the rest of your life. It could be just six months. [00:18:19] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:18:19] Speaker B: It could be two months. You know, it's not the rest of your life. And here's the deal. The greatest gift you have in your 20s is time. [00:18:26] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:18:27] Speaker B: You can start something and fail multiple times in your 20s and still not have long term ramifications for you on your family and on your relationships. [00:18:38] Speaker C: Like, imagine. Imagine if instead you're like, okay, I want to do this career. Jesus. You're literally looking at your resume going, jesus, I'm gonna give this to you and I'm gonna walk this way. If this isn't what you have for me, that's fine. But then to know when you look back again, it's Abraham. It's this idea that when Abraham walked with God over and over again to the point of where God was like, I need you to sacrifice Isaac. [00:19:02] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:19:02] Speaker C: And at that point, he looked back and said, wow, you've been faithful all through this. I'm guessing that because he walked with God, he was like, I can trust God in this moment too. [00:19:12] Speaker D: Right. [00:19:13] Speaker C: Because there are going to be bad things. John 16:33. In this world, you'll have tribulation, but I've overcome the world. So to look and go, okay, I'm taking this step knowing that I trusted you in the past because I've walked with you. It isn't like I just stumbled into this. I've been walking with you. I'm continuing to walk with you. You brought me here on purpose. I'm just going to walk with you now. [00:19:32] Speaker B: All right. Great conversation. Thank you so much. So a person's listening and they're like, great. I don't know. I still don't know what God wants me to do. What's the takeaway? What's the action item? What's the one action item from this bill? [00:19:45] Speaker C: We need to make our unknowns an opportunity for God to show himself in our lives. Ooh, that's good. I would say that starts with prayer. [00:19:54] Speaker B: Yes. [00:19:55] Speaker C: And that starts with purpose. The next purposeful step in the Lord is pursuing him. Yes. God, what do you want me to do with this? Examine my heart and then from there, okay, there's no sin in me. I'm not doing willful sin. God, I'm giving you this. I'm gonna take the next step in you. And when. I mean that. That could be the phone call that could be putting the resume out. That could be meeting someone for lunch and saying, where do I go next? [00:20:19] Speaker B: Could be going to church on Sunday morning, Coach. [00:20:20] Speaker C: Exactly. Any of those moments to go, I'm pursuing you now. And we just give that to God and God shows up. And God will show up in that. [00:20:28] Speaker B: Yep. Absolutely. Love it. Hey, thank you. Guys, so much for listening to the conversations that Bill and I have a chance to have. This is a blessing to me as always and hope it's a blessing to you. He's got some gifts. [00:21:01] Speaker C: And if you're in the DFW area, Travis is a local church pastor and so man, we need to put that link there below to let him know because you have a church beautiful mug every single week. [00:21:11] Speaker B: I do have a church plant in Justin, Texas and so if you're in that area we'd love for you to come by and check us out. And love to take you out for coffee, guys. [00:21:17] Speaker C: You're not alone in feeling like you don't know what to do. [00:21:20] Speaker B: Yes. [00:21:20] Speaker C: But when you do it in the Lord, you are man alone together with so many people who are in the same exact journey. So keep honoring God in the next step. [00:21:30] Speaker B: Love it. God bless you guys. [00:21:30] Speaker C: Have a great week. [00:21:32] Speaker A: Thanks for listening to the Known Legacy podcast. We'd love to hear from you.
